NYU at sticker?

So I have deferred NYU until fall 2017, which means I'll have to reapply for financial aid. I'm assuming since i won't have any other offers to negotiate with and I'm already committed, I won't be getting a lot or any money. Is nyu worth potentially paying full price? Also if anyone has had any experience with negotiating aid on a year of deferral please pm me!

I don't think any school is worth sticker. Can't help with your other questions.

What is sticker at NYU these days?

[IMO: By the time you graduate starting pay will likely be $200k]

Given that NYU = BL, there’s not much of a maybe to a $200k yearly income … that is what a newly minted major market BL associate already makes. It’s not a stretch to think that by 2020 the pay scale will increase.

Like I said, post bonus maybe, but where I come from 180=/=200.

It is a fucking stretch. Need I remind you it took about 10 years to go from 160 to 180k.

NSF: During 5 of those 10 years we were facing a massive recession. Much of the workforce found themselves fired or laid off. Raises for anyone in any industry was unheard of.

It depends how much you want to sell your soul to the Big Law daemons.

If you'll live a shitty, unfulfilling life otherwise, I'd recommend NYU at sticker so long as you know how to work hard.

I mean, in pure economic terms, it's probably worth it in the long run.

But you'll hate yourself and your life until 35 trying to pay down your debt in big law to get back to 0.

The question is will he hate his life anyway.

There aren't many jobs that don't expect you to work ridiculous hours anymore.

Yeah but I think having a lower debt load and working longer hours is significantly different, at least mentally, than working longer hours to service debt. Maybe not for OP, but I am much happier working longer hours when I pocket 100% of the returns than splitting the intake percentage-wise with a lender.

Why is it inconceivable to reasonably pay 300k debt in like 5-6 years if you practice big law in an area with low taxes and a low COL like Texas?

Sure, you might be able to thread that needle. $5k a year in tuition payments leaves $6k to cover your monthly expenses. But if your wonderful scenario doesn’t materialize, a $300k debt is a formidable problem.

Just cop Houston Big Law, last 6 years to pay down your debt, and THEN you can start saving some money.

That is what I was asking.

(Because almost nobody lasts 6 years in biglaw)

Except panthers.

Op is making wrong call; if you borrow 300k to go to nyu you do not pay that in 3-5 years, especially if have no family bankrolling you. You will pay that in 20-25 years.

Is that advice, or are you extremely pessimistic about the average graduate's ability to not spend money like an idiot?

Advice, also not pessimism but realism. 300k in debt which is a conservative assessment of what it would cost to go to nyu when you include living expenses in Ny and interest in debt from the first day of law school, and loans fee of a few % points is harder to pay than most people think.

Just the interest payments on the first year on that would be 18k. Sure you get paid 180, but take into account taxes and that is closer to 105. Rent in NYC is ridiculous. How is Op going to pay that in 3-5 years, 80k loan payments a year??

Much better to built a safety net and aim for forgiveness. At the end of the day it is better to have 200k in debt and 200k on your 401k/savings than 0 assets and 0 debt.

You don't think there will be a recession or another downturn in legal hiring between now and 2020?

Yea there will be. In fact, there's going to be a market correction soon. I'm holding SDOW long term.
