COA budget with family

I'm wondering how someone goes about supporting a family with children in law school if the COA budget is fixed for students regardless of family size, and is intended to only support the student. If the total financial aid amount can't exceed the cost of attendance, do spouses just typically work and pay for child care + the cost of added rent and food? Any experiences with this would be appreciated thanks!

Talk to the financial aid people at your school. If you have dependents, your budget gets adjusted and you can take out a higher max. (It has to be to support dependents, though, not car payments or credit card payments.)

You can get more money for kids, but I think it is generally assumed that a spouse is not dead weight.
