Your grants will be reduced by an amount equal to (summer income - summer cost of living and some other allowances). Every school has a different formula for COL but at HLS it's about $8,000 so anything more than that will come out of your grants for the following year.

Yeah. Penn only calculates your need when you first enroll, and you are given a need-based grant for the entire three years. It won't get recalculated based on income during your summers.

It depends on your school, I would think. It especially depends on if you're at a school that gives "need" based aid that's really just merit aid. But if you're at HYS, then yes, that's how it works.

People with $15K+ in grants at HYS don't do 1L SAs though. And people at CCN don't get 1L SAs. (Obviously these are over generalizations.)

why don't 15k+ HYSers do 1LSA?
1. Because they're really rare and hard to get.
2. Because they don't really make any money by doing them and they'd rather do something fun.

A majority of 1Ls at HLS do something PI and get school funding for it. You get around $4,200 for a minimum of 8 weeks of FT public interest related work. Last summer 368 of 1Ls received that (SPIFF). Considering SPIFF limitations (no judicial internship or non-PI jobs), I would say getting 1L SA is not super rare but not common either, unless you're URM.

W/R/T CCN v. HYS, the need based financial aid from HLS came out to be exactly the same as scholly+need based from NYU and CLS (both half ride + a little need based) for me (didn't apply to Chicago). It makes sense considering your "need" is reduced by the amount of merit scholly that you receive. obviously this puts an HLS student with an SA at a disadvantage because need based aid is reduced by income but merit scholly isn't.

So which one did you end up choosing? Did you do a 1L SA? Did any of your non-URM friends?
If so, did it decrease your need scholly? And when you say URM does that include female/vet/disabled/Asian/all kinds of Hispanics/LGBT? Or only AA/NA/MX/PR?
I did PI my 1L. Not sure what counts as URM but the 3 kids that I know got SA jobs were AA, AA and Asian. The Asian guy got SA in a small southern market (which was his home market) that wouldn't normally be considered by HLS students so they may have been trying to lure him in with SA. Also one of the two AAs (both female) worked for only 2 weeks in NY, one week in CA for a different firm and a PI job for the rest of her summer. I was told that both firms get to claim her as a diversity employee but it could be wrong.

For HLS the decrease comes only if you make more than $8K during the summer btw. After that grants are reduced dollar for dollar.

ok but just to confirm, a 1L SA decreases your 2L grant? As in, they use your 1L summer income to determine your student contribution and not what you anticipate making during your 2L summer?

thanks
Correct. Your earnings aren't factored in until you actually earn them. At the end of each summer you report back your earnings for that summer and your grants amount for the following year is calculated based on that. You can find more details and some examples here:

Does "following year" mean the academic year that immediately starts (the week after, the month after) after your summer?

e.g., 2013 SA, so your grants for the 2013-2014 academic year will drop

or truly the next year? (2014-2015).

This is somewhat confusing because I thought you apply for FA in March-May usually. How could they use summer 2013 earnings to determine your 13-14 need if you don't get your earnings until say August '13 but your FA app was submitted in April '13?
It's the year that starts a few weeks after the end of the summer.
You apply for aid in April and give them an estimate of what you expect your summer income will be. Then at the end of summer you should submit proof of income that's basically your paystub to show how much you actually made. At that point your aid can be adjusted up or down if your actual income is different from your April estimate. So aid for 2013-14 academic year is determined based on your summer 2013 income.
