FAFSA School Limit of 10?

Post by billharford » Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:08 pm

I applied to 13 law schools and am now trying to fill out the FAFSA. The issue is that the form only allows you to add 10 schools. Is there a way to add more? Or should I wait until I'm rejected by some schools so that the list is at 10 or below?

You can't add more until it's submitted from what I understand. Later on in the process when you narrow down your list you can add more/take some off.

I'm having the same problem - I talked to a FAFSA rep and they said that once you receive your SAR, you can go back to the FAFSA and "make corrections," deleting your original schools and adding the new ones. She said then you should email the original schools to let them know they can only access "Transaction 1" of your FAFSA.

The two problems I'm having after doing that is I can't decide which schools to delete from the original list because I don't want them to be mad at me, lol, and what do you do after you update FAFSA with 2011 tax returns? I did mine using estimates from 2010.

OK, I just talked to FAFSA again and this woman was way more helpful. Basically, here's what she said:

1. Complete your FAFSA listing your first ten schools using your 2010 tax returns, which are estimates. This is "Transaction 1."
2. Once you receive an email that you can view your SAR online, it means your report has been sent to those 10 original schools. It's now safe to go online, delete all ten schools, and add the new ones. Then resubmit it. This is "Transaction 2."
3. When you get your 2011 tax returns back, you will be able to go online and correct both "Transaction 1," which will become "Transaction 3" with corrections, and also correct "Transaction 2," which will become "Transaction 4" with the corrections.

She said there is no need to email the schools to tell them anything. Once your SAR is compiled, it's been sent and they have the info. Deleting the school after the SAR is available doesn't mean they won't have access - they will still definitely have it!

Hope this helps. I just did all this on my FAFSA so if you have questions feel free to PM me!

I won't be able to meet my schools' deadlines if I wait for my 2011 tax returns. For example, if you have enough in savings that you have to declare interest on your taxes, you have to wait for the tax form your bank sends you - and by law, they don't have to send it to you til the last week of February, so you're already running late.

For me it's just less stressful than trying to get tax returns back in time for the deadlines.

Got it, thanks - that makes sense. I just wasn't sure if I was missing something... thanks again!
No problem, good luck!
