I know you can't do your FAFSA until after you file taxes in early 2012, but can you submit your Need Access now--or do you need to wait until early January 2012 (i.e. after you filed your taxes for the 2011 year as well)? Sorry, I'm naive and confused. tyia

It is the same as the FAFSA - it can't be filed until Jan 1st. You use your 2011 taxes if you are applying for aid for the 2012-2013 academic year for both the Need Access application and the FAFSA.
