When it came to financial aid, my school only needed a copy of my taxes + an addendum explaining why the amount of tax I paid didn't seem to jive with my stated income or some damn thing. I suppose asking for statements isn't out of the question, but I can't imagine them wanting to spend the time to do that.

Cornell demanded student and parent tax forms, but they have their own particular brand of (dis)trust.

Harvard made me send in Federal Tax forms, but no bank statements.

Syracuse made me send in my parent's tax forms and I was exempted because I didn't file. All other schools only required the FAFSA (which has all of the critical information already on it.)

I think Chicago asked for my tax returns and W2s/1099s while they were processing my financial aid. No bank statements though.

NYU asked for my parents taxes and information about checking accounts (but not actual bank statments). Also asked about retirement plans, if I remember correctly, which really pissed me (and my parents) off.

It seriously sounds like you're thinking of doing something dishonest...

I had to file a whole lot of tax returns. No bank statements however. Only ended up actually applying for finaid at CLS and NYU.
