Hi guys,

I was just notified that I was offered USC's Rothman scholarship, which among other things, extends a guranteed 1L summer associates job at Skadden.

Does anyone know how much a summer associate typically makes at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher (Los Angeles, CA)? Any ballpark figure would help my decision process.

I never really considered biglaw until now . . .

Skadden SAs typically make market (roughly $3100 a week).

Wow, congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment.

I believe a biglaw SA can expect to make approximately 30k over the summer. I'll yield to other users who may have had SAs, though.

Given that you're in at Stanford, that was probably a good decision. But that did sound like a pretty sweet deal USC offered.

I just gotta say I'm confused (to the point of being perhaps slightly irritated): it seems to me that there's something significant you're not revealing in your profile. You cite your numbers as 168/ 3.85 (and indicate non-URM), and yet the following is your LSN acceptances profile:

5 - NYU - $140,520 [Root-Tilden-Kern recipient!] -- withdrew

Massive schollys, including in T6. Unless you are a nationally- or internationally-known professional, I see no way you have this profile without being URM or having higher numbers than you cite. You indicate your numbers are 'not that strong,' and attribute your mystifying success to being a very enthusiastic applicant (in what you wrote for your TLS profile).

Happy to have my suspicion proven wrong. I think if for some reason you did happen to get these offers based on the stats you have provided (168/3.85/non-URM/no mention of phenomenal work experience or gold-medal type soft), your experience should still be regarded with caution by other non-URMs with your stats in terms of establishing any sort of likely outcome. I mean seriously, congrats, but WOW.

A guaranteed SA position with Skadden? I didnt even know law schools could offer this. Why does Skadden agree to this?

It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden. The scholarship has been given since 2002, I think.

Yeah. I was gonna say...I had dinner with a bunch of Skadden associates last week and they made it very clear that they weren't hiring 1Ls as SAs. But maybe it was just on the east coast....

I looked at what the USC page had posted, but I feel the info of what people were doing post law school was only sufficient for 2 people, as this is relatively new. Maybe OP had some other information on the previous winners or was even in touch with a few of them.
