Comparing Financial Aid Packages from Eleven T14 Schools

I have 24 hours or the NYU offer expires; I decided to compare the difference between total cost of living with the grant awards I received from other top schools.

If I am interested in pursuing federal clerkship, is the extra cost of attending Stanford over NYU worth it?

Which deal is the best investment for my future as a public interest lawyer? As a biglaw attorney?

I have no location constraints. I apologize if some of the questions raised has been already been touched upon in my last thread; I just felt it was necessary to consider cost of living.

Thanks, TLS.

Go to Stanford!

1. It is beautiful place to spend three years.
2. Getting a Clerkship will be easier.
3. I don't think Stanford gives that much money to most people.
4. public interest lawyer? As a federal clerk? As a biglaw attorney? - The answer to all of these is Stanford.

You can not lose with your choices but Stanford over NYU anyday.

I'm a whore for SLS, but I think it's worth the 30k. Straight Ps gets biglaw, esp. in NYC, and top half is well in line for Fed. clerkships.

If you really liked NYU, ask for an extension so you can come visit SLS. If they don't grant extensions, it's tougher turning something down for another school sight-unseen, but I do think Stanford's worth the 10k per year.

Steps for success:

1) Add a poll for fun
2) Come to SLS :D

(also to contribute something maybe worthwhile)
The Stig wrote:Obviously, debt-averseness is different for anyone, but I will share what my professor (HLS grad) told me about considering scholarships in the decision-making process.

He was completely in support of investing in the "best" school that I could choose from that I felt comfortable in/liked. Essentially that another 30/70/100k of debt could be paid off in a extra year or two at a big firm, but the law school experience/network/benefits of the "better" school will pay off for the rest of one's life. He is under 40, but went from a V5 firm to an NGO to an Oxford PhD to Treasury to a professor at my UG school since graduating from HLS 15 years ago. He commented that his degree from HLS was a nice boost for everything to which he applied, not just his first job.

Long story short, you can pay off extra (HY)SLS debt in a couple years, but reap all the benefits for the rest of your life (50+years, right?). Hope that helps!

Stanford has a tremendously better clerkship placement rate than NYU and, I believe, a significantly better loan repayment assistance program that you'll probably avail yourself of if you do public interest. Unless the sight of palm trees makes you want to kill yourself, go to Stanford and don't look back.

Stanford, it's the obvious choice. Congrats on the Rothman by the way, even though it looks like you're not taking it.
