FAFSA Help

Two issues:
1.)
So I filled out the FAFSA and marked the two schools that I am considering right now. Will the rest of the federal loan process be worked out between me and the school I attend, or will I go to a certain website to directly apply for federal loans when I know where I'm attending? I realize that the loans are disbursed through my school, but I'm a little lost on how to make sure I am able to secure them in the first place.
2.)
My wife and I will need money to make some initial expenses this summer before school starts. Are private loans my only option here?
