Top Law Schools

Hello all,

I am an undergrad taking the LSATs in December 2010. My current GPA is 3.66; I'll be a Junior this upcoming school year. I was curious what numbers will grant me a 40+% scholarship to these schools, assuming my GPA stays where it is (which it will). I am interested in all three of these schools and just curious what scores other people had to receive great scholarships.

In addition, UGA, W and M, UNC and U of Alabama, are 4 public schools that I am interested in but I am out of state (from Virginia). Therefore, besides W and M, I know out of state is a pretty high price; what scores did any of you have to get hefty scholarships from these schools?

I tried searching around but couldn't find many personal anecdotes.

for Wake Forest (only one "R" btw) I would say a 162/3 will give you about 40% or more. If you can manage a 164 or higher you're going to get close to a full ride. Emory you'll need like a 165 or higher for a good amount of money. UNC probably won't even give you money, (if they even let you in). Its really tough for non-NC residents. W&M might be a good bet. You're in state so you'll only pay like 22k/year. With about a 166 you could probably knock that in half. W&L and UGA I'm not sure about. William and Mary was (relative to others) very stingy to me. Check their ABA data. Their median grant amount was like 10,000 or something like that.

Emory's medians are rising... but 167 should get you something close to 40% probably.

No idea about Wake or W&L

it's true that William and Mary avg scholly is 10k/yr, but when tuition is only 32k OOS and 22k in-state, its really not that bad at all

Well, I haven't taken any diagnostics or anything so I'm not sure what type of scoring range I would land in. However, I am a Philosophy and Religion double major which I'm hoping will have trained my mind a little bit for PREPARING for the LSATS.

Are you all suggesting these numbers in correlation with my GPA or regardless of my GPA those are the LSAT scores I need. I understand schools primarily focus on the LSAT score, I was just curious if my 3.66 would help aid me 1-2 points on my LSATS (165 + 3.66 = scholly at emory as opposed to 166/167 you guys mentioned).

Also, those grants that are given at William and Mary, do they apply to in state students as well? Therefore, if the average student receives a 10k grant, and the in state tuition is 22k, W and M could ultimately cost 12k a year?

What a deal! Also, I know UNC is super tough to get into out of state; however, I thought they honored legacy pretty high as well? I have a long line of family that went there for law school.

164 was the cutoff this year at Wake for good money.

No.

164/3.66 will get you between 10-18k (around a 30-50% scholarship) at Wake Forest most likely.

I had a 164 / 3.2 and got $18K a year. A 3.66 would probably push that to $25K or so.

Not a full ride, but nothing to be upset about.

That's why I said that about WF 164 and 3.66 close to a full ride.

If I got 25k with a 163, 3.66 from WF, I wouldn't be complaining or be upset at all. That'd be amazing. I'm just looking for the best school for the best deal (potentially). I know this is a hypothetical, I'm just curious what to expect.

Somewhere around there, yeah. Between $18K and $25K unless there is something else really compelling. Are you a URM?

I don't attend Wake, but COL is cheap. I looked at renting a house for $1100, $1200. Apartments are about half that.

Oh, my apologies, I got the notion that you were at Wake Forest.

I would assume Winston Salem would be fairly inexpensive, relatively speaking. A decent apartment at 600 dollars a month would be a great deal.


Not to take my thread in a completely different direction, but out of the schools I mentioned, which one do you all think is the most "fun"? Like, which school has a student body that will get along and have fun together (aka being social).

My brother just finished med school at MCV and has some life long friends he has made over the 4 year there. They drank, partied, got wild, and had fun when they COULD. I don't want to go to law school and be surrounded by a bunch of lame study freaks; but, I also don't want to befriend the ONLY other people in law school who have the mindset as me and are in the lower half of law school.

I only know about Wake from the ones you mentioned, but I liked it a lot when I visited. It seemed like everyone would get along and have fun.
