I got a 20k grant law school tuition grant from George Washington Law School. Does that mean this is 20k I don't need to pay back or anything out of my 70k loan? Because of it is, that is fucking amazing.

Yes. That's what a grant is.

I would imagine a grant would be something you didn't need to pay back, at least that was the case for grants I received in undergrad. Just to be sure, I would contact GW Financial Aid to get it straight from them.

Well that doesn't make sense? Is it a scholarship or grant?

Seriously, you have 500 posts and don't know how a scholarship works? If you have a grant, and meet any stipulations they impose like grades, then it is applied to your student budget and reduces what you have to borrow.

Another question to ask them is whether the grant will be available for all three years (so that you can plan your future finances) -- some schools do not commit to making "grant money" available for all three years, whereas they commit to making "scholarship money" available so long as the scholarship requirements are met each year.

grants are usually needbased money you don't have to pay back and scholarships are usually based on merit and also don't have to be paid back.

Okay that makes sense now. I haven't read many posts dealing grants separate from scholarships so I wasn't sure. Thanks

Grants need not be repaid. Congrats, GermX.
