What exactly does an EFC score of 13838 mean? Is this good or bad?

Shit... I definitely don't have that. But I can still apply for other financial aid/private student loans right?

There is a statement that you can submit to you Financial Aid office explaining that you have special circumstances and the EFC does not equate to your ability to pay for school. In My case, I'm married with a wife going to college and not working right now before school.

Thanks for the heads up... not sure how unique my circumstances are. I live in NYC and pay out the ass in rent and pretty much everything else. Completely independent financially... but that doesn't seem unique. So.. who do I send this statement to? Is it via email?

I am in the same situation. I have a high EFC; however, I will not be working when I enter school. I consulted the schools I'm considering and they said that they would work with me to try and get me the most amount of subsidized loans possible and one school even said they would call me if they needed additional documentation to obtain this.

Basically, it seems like FAFSA is necessary for the subsidized portion of the loans, then you go for the govt unsubsidized (fixed 6.8% rate) then you go for private (which should be around 8% fixed max.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Contact the schools financial aid office. They should be able to adjust your aid to account for whatever you can actually contribute. I think the EFC from the FAFSA limits some of the aid you are eligible for, but you still will have full eligibility for at least unsubsidized federal loans. Basically, as long as you don't have excessive undergrad debt you should be able to finance most or all of law school with federal loans regardless of your EFC.

If that's the case, then I can sleep easy at night.

to clarify... i mean $691 outside of the federal subsidized/unsubsidized loans (and grants) you'll receive. So you'll still have loans, they'll just have nice, low interest rates.
