My grandmother is a Western Band Cherokee, she lived on the reservation in Tallequah, OK until she ran off with my grandfather. I'm claiming URM status because I see no reason not to. I'm registered with the tribe and visit my cousins who still live on the reservation. Looking at me you wouldn't be able to tell, but if you met my family you'd see why it's a big deal I'm applying to law school. I say, if it is in your heritage and you're proud of it, use the URM. However, if you're just using it to get ahead and have no real ties to the community you shouldn't.
