Does being a first-gen student change anything?

I'm a first-gen URM and I'm wondering if this is viewed as more favorable than if I was URM but not first-gen.

You won't see a bump like for being a URM, but it can add an interesting soft factor to your app if you describe your experience in your PS or diversity statement. Berkeley and NYU both have full tuition scholarship programs specifically for first gen students.

Nothing substantive, but I'm sure it helps a little. It might be more of a tie-breaker if a school's on the fence between WLing you or accepting you. I also got a personal email from the dean of admissions at Northwestern about being a First-gen student so it seems like a group that schools try to actively recruit.

It didn't get me into any schools my numbers told me I was unlikely to get in to. But I do think that + my work experience (PI) helped me get better than average scholarships at a few schools (ranked mid teens - twenties)
