handful of dudes in the women's legal society at my school; i know it's not the same, but you get the idea. from what i've seen, groups just want members

while i agree completely with this practice, something about it seems off.

it will make more sense when you get to school and realize clubs do not actually do anything they are only good for outlines/events where they serve booze

Uhhh, if anything, half black is technically black.

Join if you want. Dont join if you dont want. Whatever makes you happy. It definitely wouldnt be inappropriate to join. It would be inappropriate for anyone to have a problem with you joining.

I support the bi racial club idea. Im bi racial too, and would join. Actually, maybe I should be president of my schools chapter. We are the best because we are hybrids who usually get the best genes from both sides.

IMO, Genetics are technical. I could have been raised by wolves, but I wouldnt technically be a wolf! IMO, you are technically black and white.

I don't believe it's inappropriate at all.

It's very common that a lot of black people still acknowledge your "blackness" based on "one drop rule" principle, meaning that whether you are one half, one fourth, or one eighth black, you're still considered black. You can see this with the president. He's biracial, and though he was raised mostly by his white mother and white grandparents, he's still viewed as black and accepted as such by most Black Americans.

As far as feeling you are "internally white", you'd really be surprised at how many other biracial and black people feel that way because of growing up adopted in white families or growing up in predominantly white communities and schools. They're still accepted and able to participate in black organizations like BLSA. Go for it!

this is laughable. you, my friend, are undoubtedly african-american. most people use the one drop rule (including myself) so essentially you are black. your background is unique, and should be welcome at any BLSA. and who knows. that half just might turn into a whole.

what does this even mean? Because you weren't raised in a ghetto with two black parents, you aren't black? I'm sorry that you missed out on the stereotype of the black experience, but you are black. and I hope, proud.

Aren't most black people in the US mixed in some way? I may be mistaken, but in my opinion, you are whatever you think you are. And I think most BLSAs are open to everybody.

absolutely true. about 80% of blacks americans have traceable european ancestry.

Yep. And ~30% of white Americans have traceable African ancestry.

Next question: is the collective identity of the various members of these organizations relevant to what they do (as a part of the organization)? I can maybe see this being the case for Christian Legal Societies or LGBT legal organizations, but how does this fit for associations like BLSA or even predominantly female groups?
