Top Law Schools

Hello,

I am hoping I could have any insight on my chances for the Fall '13:

Mexican-Lebanese-American, First fam college grad, 3.0 UGPA, 3.7 Master's GPA, 161 LSAT (will retake in Oct), law firm and congressional internships, strong LORs, and fluency in 3 languages. I want to attend LS in Texas or any other southern or SW states.

Your masters GPA will barely matter in the calculus, and will almost certainly not offset your UGPA. With those stats, you're looking at Tech with money, Baylor's spring and summer classes at sticker or minimal scholarship, and a shot at their fall class.

Almost definitely in with money at St. Mary's, STCL and TXWes if you're into that.

Almost definitely out at SMU and UH. Definitely out at UT.

I have no idea about other schools in the SW. Depends a lot on how you define the SW, for starters.

Likely out at UH/SMU. Assuming URM status, if you can score a few more points, your chances would be much better at these schools. URM status + median or above LSAT usually equals a pretty good shot.

Okay shot at Baylor as is.

In at Tech and the other TTTexas schools with some $.

Really focus on the LSAT retake. If you break 167 you'll get into SMU/UH with money. UT would most likely be out though, unless you get like a 173+.

I am aiming for UHLC, so hopefully I can boost my score and have my softs as a factor. I have researched StMary's quite a bit and see that they have successful alumni, so that school and Baylor would be great.

Also, by "southern and sw" I meant any university in the southern region (states) or a little bit west. No schools in Cali, though.

guys, correct me if im wrong but the OP is barely URM. Lebanese doesnt count and Mexicans receive only a minimal admissions bump.

My family was born and lives in Mexico; I was born in the US, though have lived in both countries. I have dual citizenship. I would assume that is pretty significant under the URM standard, or count somewhat. I am not riding on the URM too much-- just seeing how it would help my chances.

wrong idea, thats diversity, not under representation which is what URM means.

That doesn't really answer the question about your bloodline. URM status is about genes, not nationality.

As for the SW, The only decent school I know of that you would have an okay shot at is the University of Arizona. Outside shot at ASU.

The whole point of that info was to say that I am Mexican-american, which is a URM from what I've heard about and researched on. Thank you all for the posts!

You'll get into a T-20 for sure, possibly higher. Write an addendum explaining that low GPA. Perhaps you had to work throughout college or had family obligations that interfered with academics. In any case, best of luck.

Although I am retaking the LSAT in Dec-- Out of StMary's, South Texas CL, and Texas Tech, which law school is the overall better option? I feel as if STCL would be solid as far is its location, which would provide many networking options in such a large city. However, I've read good things about TT law.

If you are ok with working in a small firm, they all have their upside.

Houston is a big legal market, but competing directly with UHLC would suck.

TT is in no mans land out in west Texas, and if you are cool with that, then you have your own personal market.

San Antonio doesnt have many big firms, but the population is large and St. Mary's is the only law school in the metroplex. They have the best placement stats of the 3.

In the end, your choice should probably come down to location preference and debt. None of these schools are worth taking out 100k+ for. As a URM above their median, I would expect you to get some scholarships though.
