My father was born and raised in Trinidad? He is from the Indian descent. My mother was also born and raised in Trinidad. Her mother is of Indian descent and her father is from Nigeria. My parents were divorced when I was 13 and money was tight. I joined the military to pay for college and here I am. Not sure entirely on how URM works but would love to get a little insight.

If you're Nigerian then you would be considered a URM.

Yeah, you could be URM as far as being African-American (Nigerian) is concerned, but Trini in and of itself does not make one URM. So yeah, in other words, if you put on your apps that you are African-American or Black (of African descent) or however they phrase it, then you'll get a boost. But if you put that you are.... w/e other category you might be tempted to put instead(?), then you won't.

And of course, this is based on the ABA definition of URM.

Are you a quarter black, OP? If yes, boost. If no, no boost.

Being trini isn't a boost (side note: there are a surprising amount of us on here!). If you are of African descent, then yes.

African-Americans (meaning racially black) get a URM boost at most schools. Do you identify as black/AA? If you do, then you should be treated as URM (even if you're only 1/4 AA).
