would it be worth it to try to "pad" my gpa by taking extra classes to become more competitive? or will admissions see right through it?

Admissions won't care about the classes you took, they care about your GPA. Do whatever you can to raise your GPA. 3.4 would be great, 3.5+ even better.

With that LSAT if you can get 3.5 or better you could be looking at upper T14. Srsly.

wait u are an AA male with a 173/3.3 ...u really should not be worried about getting into a top 14 school cuz with a good/great PS and DS you could get into Harvard (based on prior cycles...when this cycle plays out you can compare)
I would say apply to Harvard down. Not sure about YS though. But could throw an app at S. they have accepted urms with your #'s b4.

they don't care about your softs.
but they will care about your GPA.
HTH
ETA: forgot you were URM... they really won't care. Get your GPA up if you can, but other than that, apply to the entire T14 and enjoy one of the T6 with those numbers, probably with a scholarship.

You're african american with a 173 ... you definitely have a VERY good shot at getting into at least one T14. Apply to all that interest you, it wouldn't be a wasted application fee.

or will taking classes not at my current undergrad but at a cc this summer look super obvious. oh and is lawschoolnumbers accurate? like verified somehow?

lawschoolnumbers aren't verified, but fairly accurate.
lawschoolpredictor is not so good for URM.
And I seriously don't think they'll care if it is obvious... seriously, it'll just make you look like a go getter. Just get it done before your BA is awarded or they won't count.

as an a.a. male, you currently have one of the best softs in the law school admission game

For in with $, I would say mayyyyybe if you can get that gpa close to a 3.6 and submit early. But without money I think you stand a very good chance at getting in many T10

This is not meant to be insulting at all, I just think it's important for you to realize:
As an African American with a 173, you find yourself in a very elite club. I'm talking VIP. There are probably only about 25 AA's this year with an LSAT better than yours.
Don't sell yourself short. Harvard is a distinct possibility, Yale is possible with a compelling PS, and money at a T10 is all but inevitible.
Congrats on the score!
http://www.jbhe.com/news_views/51_gradu ... _test.html (statistics are out of date, but indicative)
"In 2004, 10,370 blacks took the LSAT examination. Only 29 blacks, or 0.3 percent of all LSAT test takers, scored 170 or above"
