Rags to (assumed) Riches

I would like to hear of your personal tales of woe.
For example...
I spent most of my high school years screwing around. I graduated with a very low GPA (not enough by today's standards). I went to college with fair results (in my low 20s). All of a sudden, I woke up and decided to do something different. I went back to college (late 30s) and have maintained a 4.0 GPA. I struggle with math, but that's not enough to ruin my chances of acceptance. I have a very good chance at a T-14 (with my practice scores). Lets hope the test says the same thing.
This is all for my kids. A real teaching moment when they struggle with homework at the kitchen table.
That is what I'm looking for here. Who has something like that? Tell us your tale of woe!
