Michigan Overturns Affirmative Action Ban

Michigan has been rising on my list of schools to apply to, do you guys think that this ruling will have a meaningful impact for URMs out there like myself who may be applying to Michigan or has Michigan basically been doing this despite the ban and there will not be a meaningful extra bump for URMs when compared to years prior.

I don't think the law school ever stopped.

Yeah that's the reason I kind of tempered myself after originally reading the story.

I'm pro-AA from a policy perspective, but everything I've read about this case seems to favor the state.

It won't matter for OP; Mich is a top law school and will have to keep in line w/ the policies of other top law schools on these things.

Michigan probably didn't use race in their decisons per se but I'm sure diverse perspectives from living life as a minority were probably favored pretty heavily.

What kind of URM are you and what are your numbers?

Edit: I know your numbers but what kind of URM are you?

3.03 GPA and 172 LSAT
I'm an African American male, I don't if they take socio-economic factors into decisions but if so I'm the first male in my family to even graduate high school and my family is pretty low on the income scale, like bordering on the poverty line.

Michigan is looking better and better to me also. While this may not affect law school applicants but it helps them gain points in my eyes as an overall university.

AA male myself. Per TLS wisdom, you are in a pretty good position with respect to the LSAT score but the boost is more significant, with respect to boosting the LSAT score than the GPA. You definitely do have some incredible options though, with your numbers. Especially if you can add a legitimate addendum explaining the GPA. Is the 3.03, the LSDAS GPA? I ask because some people cite their UG gpa which can be different from the LSDAS gpa. Also, are you still in undergrad or have you graduated? I ask because if you're still in undergrad you can find ways to slightly raise the gpa before applying. I think there's a pretty decent chance that WUSTL will bite and you will probably get some offers even in the T14. I will apply to Cornell via Early Action since it's non-binding.

http://www.lawschoolpredictor.com has you at a "strong consider" at Cornell and a consider from Penn on down. LSP is however frequently funky when predicting URM cyles and many agree it's hard to predict URM cycles.

Consider the following below, from LSN:

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/vdjenkins

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/britishknights

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/skoalmanos

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/Flustercluck

http://lawschoolnumbers.com/giantswin

And many more. I will encourage you to search on LSN within a range of your numbers. Your numbers are kinda interesting, usually it works the other way. Do you have an LSAC Fee waiver? I would bombard the T14 plus WUSTL and any others you feel like applying to. Ask for fee waivers if you haven't received them already. Spray and pray with your applications and see what sticks. You will get in somewhere good.

Thanks for all of the information, very helpful. The 3.03 is my LSAC GPA and I still have one year to go, I'll be a senior this upcoming school year. I have an LSAC fee waiver so I plan on applying to all the T14 and alot of other schools in the Northeast and Midwest. My dream school is NYU, but considering how weird URM cycles can be I'm not going to set my heart on a single school yet.

If it's your dream school ED. You have a great shot at getting admitted.

Thanks I've been thinking about it but I know that means I might not get as much scholarship money, but considering their LRAP program and my preference to pursue a lifelong career in public interest or as a prosecutor then I'd be willing to pay sticker for NYU, although I'd prefer not to.
