Diversity statement - Write how you identify with your race/culture/history etc.
Write about your experiences as they relate to diversity, check the bubble since your race is mexican (even if your culture isn't necessarily), and let the admissions committee tell you whether what you wrote is genuine enough to warrent any sort of URM consideration.

If you don't identify with your Mexican side at all then it would be dishonest to pretend like you do. Just be honest in your application and see what happens.

You could easily write about being caught in the middle. Not being fully accepted as Mexican, even though you are surrounded by the culture, but yet not fully identifying with being French. I think its a diversity issue that many Latino's in the US deal with, and if you did it right I think that it would be very well received by adcomms.

His mother is Mexican and she raised him. How much more Mexican does he need to be?
My advice to you is the same advice I give to people with non-European sounding names. Talk about your ethnicity in a diversity statement. Otherwise, some admissions people won't know your race because they aren't given access to which box you checked. However, if you have a sentence in there about how your mother is full mexican and she raised you poor and you've only met your French father a hand full of times, you'll be fucking golden.
Edit: I'm seriously surprised at how many URMs don't identify themselves as URM in a diversity statement or PS. Don't just say you're hispanic in a PS or DS. Hispanic is not URM, Mexican is URM.

You don't have to try to be Mexican. You are 1/2 Mexican by virtue of your mother. You don't have to speak spanish, like tacos, or sound like cheech and chong. Being an ethnicity does not mean you are a stereotype.
I'm black and I can't dance, play ball, and have never been incarcerated. Guess what, I'm still black.

I understand why it's wrong to be dishonest, and I assure you that's not my intention. It's not that I don't identify with my mexican side AT ALL. I was raised by a mexican mother and her side of the family. I guess what I meant in my OP was that i don't have a palpable/quantifiable/tangible connection to my ethnicity/upbringing ON PAPER.
Like i said, I simply didn't join any "disadvantaged poor minority" students association, even though I am arguably as poor and disadvantaged as any of those students that do. I'm just hoping that doesn't hurt me in the admissions process.
I already admitted that I don't speak spanish either.
But does that disqualify me from the same benefits as other mexicans, even though I too was raised in a single parent household (mom made 30k) while she raised my brother and I?
