Good for him, I guess. I don't ever recall hearing about this on-campus, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.

Although I think at this point most people don't even differentiate between a "straight" and a GLBTQ individual getting these types of honors (or at least I don't)

When there hasn't been a single openly gay senator, supreme court justice, governor, president, or cabinet member in US history, it's nice to see offices in which LGBT people are represented. :)

If we were counting closeted anti-gay Republicans in the group, we'd be overrepresented.
