Do I check the "Mexican" box? My last name is obviously not Hispanic.

You certainly can check the Mexican box on applications. Are you also writing a diversity statement about your background? If not, it might be a good idea to think about one.

Lastly, there is a great Mexican/Irish bar in Boston called Jose McIntyre's. Too bad the two teams will never meet in the world cup as there couldn't be a better place to watch that game.

Wife did in pretty similar situation; probably helped her.

You might want to elaborate with a diversity statement as well. But you'll certainly get a boost.

Write a diversity statement in which you state your exact situation: mother is Mexican and father is Irish. This easily explains your last name and the rest of the diversity statement should emphasize your Mexican heritage. It doesn't have to be anything over the top. You should be able to come up with something. Enjoy the boost.
