About Duke and Georgetown

Stats: 3.47 (lsac GPA) 163/166 LSAT Non Traditional AA Male

Goal is federal gov't. and would eventually like to shoot for academia if my grades are good enough and if I am successful at getting something published. But initial goal is a federal regulatory agency.

Let me add that I have not yet been admitted to either school and there is no guarantee that I would get into either, so this is hypothetical.

I am putting this thread in the URM forum because I want comments from a minority perspective on the 2 schools. From reading the very large URM thread for this cycle, it did not seem that there were many AA applicants that were excited about Duke. So I wanted to get people's thoughts on the atmosphere at Duke for minority candidates.

Because G'town is in DC I would guess that it would be the preferred school for federal govt. but Duke places well overall. Also, Durham's cost of living is one of the factors I am strongly considering. I just want to see if others know of reasons that Duke might not be a good place for me and my family.

Thanks.

Out of curiosity why not aim higher? 3.5/166 + AA Male could get you into schools ranked fairly higher in my opinion.

DUKE!!!

Haha, congrats man. DC is a nicer place to live and they both are the same in terms of career prospects.

I will be applying to some higher rated schools, however, there are a lot of personal factors that make Duke seem like a good fit for me. Also, I think I may be able to get into some of those higher rated schools, but at my age and with my family situation, I will have to really go where the money is, even if that is Illinois or WUSTL or Wake Forest unless of course I get HYS. I would pay sticker at any of those 3. With others I would have to consider there combination of scholarship offers and LRAP.

I would be concerned about UVA because I don't know how many job opportunities my wife would have in a town as small as Charlottesville, but I will definitely consider it. I think the Raleigh area would be better for employment opportunities for her.

Also, considering my goal of federal govt. that seems to move Georgetown up in the rankings for me. I'd like to visit both campuses. I am really concerned about the cost of living in DC though.

So this is just my way of doing research for these 2 schools from a minority perspective.
I will be researching some others as the cycle continues. Thanks for your input, and I'd love to hear more from you about where you think I should apply and why.

I'm confused. You stated Duke, and then you continued by saying that DC is a nicer place to live. So if DC is a nicer place to live, why are you voting for Duke? Or did I misunderstand your post? Thanks for your reply.
