@Matlock; Realize that Native Hawaiians, Samoans, Tongans, Tahitians and Micronesians (Chuukese, Marshall Islands, etc) are all distinctly different people with distinctly different cultures. It's kind of like how Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Nicaraguans are all different - perhaps to a greater degree because each of the aforementioned pacific island peoples speak their own languages and their islands of origin are actually nowhere near each other. Native Hawaiian, by the way, is a classification - it refers to the people who lived in Hawaii before Captain Cook showed up, as well as their descendants. They used to have their own government before it was overthrown by American business interests about a hundred years ago.

I see this now and agree, if this is what classification the OP falls under, that he's definitely Native American. It just would have been super special of him to explain this situation in its entirety without being so vague. He was acting like some white dude who just so happened to be born in Hawaii.

The only URMs for the purpose of Law School Admissions are African-Americans, Native Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans. Anyone who says anything different is just wrong. Other groups are minorities and may be able to write interesting diversity statements, but they don't receive systematic bump-like advantages in the admissions process.

Are native Hawaiians not considered Native Americans? I think if Eskimos are URMS then Hawaiians are too. Yet, I don't think you are considered URM if you are of Japanese descent and are from Hawaii.

No white dude from Hawaii would call themselves Native Hawaiian unless they wanted an asskicking by some of their large native neighbors. People here use native exclusively for those whose ancestors were here before Captain Cook showed up. even if you ancestors showed up in 1800 you're still not native as far as people in hawaii are concerned.
