also found this really funny story while picture hunting...

There’s this website I discovered here called findateacher.net. (see the link to the right) It’s a way for English teachers and other language teachers to find Japanese students,　and vice versa. I haven’t got any bites on my profile yet, but I don’t really care, I’m busy enough as it is to deal with getting my own private students on the side. The real reason to join this site is they have these international parties on the first Saturday of every month at this club called Pure in the Shibuya section of Tokyo. (And if you’re really ambitious, every second Saturday in Osaka) So I hit this up last Saturday night with a couple of my English teacher colleagues. For 2500yen (about $21US - and that’s the last conversion I’ll do for you) you get all the Domino’s pizza and mixed drinks you can humanly consume from 6:30-9pm. We rolled in there around 7:30 after working all day, and went to work. After several pieces of pizza and about 6 stiff Jack and Cokes, I was feeling no pain. I got 3 “leads” for new students, only one of whom I was really interested in. Maiko was 22, and there with her mom. (Japanese chicks are a little different, enough said) So I was chatting them up for a while by the pizza table. This girl spoke little to no English and her mom was literally acting as a translator between the two of us. I had to try to get her number, just had to. So when I asked her “denwa-bango wa nan des ka?” (what is your phone number?) she actually turned to her Mom for approval, which was granted. Let me remind you, she was 22, so this was in no way as sketchy as it sounds. Anyway I got the bango and it was written on the back of a map that got us to this club in the first place. (You need maps here, addresses are impossible to find) So later on I handed the map to my buddy so he could tell his friend how to meet us, and this guy loses the fucking map with her number. Not daijobu (cool). Anyway maybe it wasn’t meant to be, but Maiko-san, if you do learn English and happen read this blog, please contact me. Domo Arigato Gozaimas. (Thank you very much)

It was 3 a.m. and you were clearly all alone
in this world, much less this room
that stank of unwashed cigarettes, bagels, and newspapers smeared all over with the touch of a hurried genius more worried with meeting a deadline than getting a good night of sleep.

So there you were, and here I was, sleep was stealing softly out the window being sucked out into the blackness that was desperately trying to suffocate the single street lamp illuminating our dull lives.

This was the moment of truth. You took out a book of poetry and I knew you were a lot stronger than you thought you were. I knew you would be interesting, and I knew I'd never get to know you.

The clock now officially read 3:14, and for a sunday morning, this was about as close to church and heavenly introspection as I would get this week, and probably this year. Not that I cared, I was doomed to this life long before I knew that I had had a choice in the matter.

But you, I still couldn't figure out why you were here, and who you were waiting for. I hoped you were waiting for yourself to come to the realization that you weren't stuck here in this terminal. That you were free to leave at any moment. You were free.

They call me free. I call myself a fool.
You brushed the stray strand of hair out of your weary eyes and began to tear up at a page that seemed creased and worn with the knowledge that it held your attention everytime your eyes stumbled upon it's fading lines.

I wondered how many nights your mother sat up staring at the ceiling hearing the whir of the fan worried sick about her daughter who'd left the promised land.

Why is everything so metallic in these rooms. Soft comfort and warmth would cheer the helpless soul who must wait his turn in purgatory before moving on, whether to heaven or hell, only the ticket holder knows.

But you finally caught my studying gaze, and you smiled a quick smile, brushed away the one falling tear, switched legs, and moved on.

And as you sat there, I folded my paper, checked my watch, and moved on to catch my train, hearing the lives of a thousand souls, and seeing glimpses of a guiding hand keep aflame the light of a single street lamp that illuminated the love against the chill and the darkness.
