USC vs. UCLA vs. Fordham

Post by plutarchy » Wed Apr 26, 2017 1:13 pm

I have a week left to decide! 40K a year from USC, 35K from Fordham, and nothing from UCLA. I'm ok with working in either NYC or LA. Socially, there's more for me in NY but it would be cheaper for me to live in LA because I can live at home. I'm interested in intellectual property, and considering getting a joint JD-MBA.

what's total cost of attendance, what are your stats, in what setting do you want to practice (biglaw, midlaw, whatever), and since these are mostly regional schools, where do you want to end up practicing?

You can remove UCLA from this conversation if you're paying sticker.

First impression is that NYC v Southern Cal, for where you want to work, is the determining factor

Take UCLA off the list, its not worth $120k more than USC. From there, pick which area of the country you want to work in since they're both regional schools.

USC with minimal COL expenses isn't awful.

Just heard from UCLA that they're offering 10K a year. I'm not sure if this really changes anything.

I'm surprised UCLA didn't give you anything when you received a scholarship from USC. Did you try to negotiate with UCLA?

+1. UCLA's coa should at least match USC to be a contender.

It changes nothing at all. If you are debating between the two, go to USC.

I would take fordham out, i think its still too expensive. USC's scholarship would bring you down to about 20k a year. Even with UClA's in state tuition + 10k a year scholarship your tuition would still be 35k a year. Assuming you could live at home regardless of attending USC or UCLA, i dont think UCLA is worth 15k a year (45k over 3 years) more than USC. Go to USC

Yes. OP: These are regional schools, so the overriding factor here is where you want live and work. Saying "I'm unsure where I want to practice law" is fine if you're deciding between Stanford and Harvard, but not if you're deciding between USC and Fordham.
