Michigan (90K) vs. Cornell (102K) - BigLaw

I have asked this question on my old thread, so I'll make things easier this time: I just want to land a biglaw job after graduation, regardless of location. Which one is the right decision?

Personally, AA is a much more pleasurable place to live, but I can make the sacrifice and live in hell if I can secure a job after I graduate.

Any advice VERY MUCH appreciated!

ps. Michigan is summer start, if this piece of info helps.

Are 90k and 102k your scholarship offers or your total COA? Answer the above questions so things can be more clear.

It's close enough that either choice is fair given Cornell's higher base tuition, such that personal geographic preference can play a role. The schools are basically peers (maybe with the slight edge to Cornell), but if you would be much happier in Ann Arbor and the costs are roughly equal that can be worth it.

Honestly though, I don't really understand how someone can be happy in Ann Arbor but miserable in Ithaca. They're more alike than different.

Mindset will play a factor. If you go somewhere thinking it's going to be terrible, those negative feelings can plausibly color your perception so that the experience feels terrible regardless.

If you want biglaw and don't care about location, Cornell would seem to be the clear choice. Unclear about your financial situation though, which could possibly change things. Disclosure: I attend Cornell.

Did one undergrad the other grad. Go to Ann Arbor. I like the class size reductions, new focus in the career group, and the money spend on the physical plant. You will need top 30% and good interview skills to get what you want at either school. If you have a burning desire for NY big law only, then Ithaca.

This is false, because OP said they just wanted Biglaw, period. Either school will open a lot of doors for you if you manage to get into the top third, but Cornell has the better overall Biglaw numbers.

This is as close to a true coin-flip as there is. Both can get you where you want to be and COAs aren't drastically different. Dealer's choice. If it were me I'd choose Ann Arbor, but I can definitely see the argument for Cornell if NYC biglaw was the major driver. Congrats!

I have no hard data on this, but my impression is that summer start can give you a decent boost going into OCI.

Maybe we can use it as an opportunity to make fun of Michigan at least?

If you were just targeting NYC biglaw, then Cornell would be the easy choice.

Agree that this is about as close to a tie as it gets.

Visit both & decide.
