I was offered admission at Minnesota but this makes me think twice:

Is it in danger of closing?

I don't know how you could have gathered that from the article. They will not close.

Well enrollment has been in decline since 2008. In 2015 only 176 people enrolled down from 220 from the previous year... but maybe its far fetched yes...

Yes. The state of Minnesota's need for attorneys has rapidly diminished since 2008. I expect the profession to be completely extinct by 2023. Sell, sell, sell.

I stopped reading after this: "more bad news: Duke University is no longer top 10." Duke was in the top 10 for one year, and a bit of back and forth movement within the T14 is meaningless. The author has no regard for the truth and you should disregard the article completely.

ETA: I don't mean to say that you should definitely go there, but this article should have no effect on your decision.

You ruined my hilarious "Actually, the smart money is on Duke closing, not Minnesota" joke

I know it shouldn't. I was offered very good aid and I think it would be good but the article makes me think twice.

I don't think it is so much about the rankings, its more to do with the fact that enrolling has been declining non stop...

Recent alum here. Minnesota is not going to close.

The law school is in the process of becoming financially independent of the greater university - and as such has had some budget problems in recent years, which the greater university has stepped in to resolve. (The law school is also in the middle of a fundraising drive, probably to build an endowment, that's brought in about $50 million over the past few years).

You should be more worried about the Minnesota legal market, which is still really tight.

TheRealSantaClaus wrote:Minnesota Law could probably take in 500 new students this year if they wanted to. The main reason they don't do that is because they want to maintain high admissions standards and the number of qualified applicants has dropped over the past 5 years. They will be fine.

If any schools are in danger of closing, it's the TTT and TTTT schools that can't lower their admissions standards any further.
True! I read this already! That's why the class is so small. Higher standards...!

And that's a fine argument for why some schools are in trouble (less so a state flagship and state's best law school), but that thrust isn't what I'm castigating in that post. The entire line about "more bad news," where she cites rankings drops as bad news as though a.) rankings mean much at all, or b.) that even if we pretend they matter, Duke or Emory falling out of the T10 or T20 isn't good news for whoever took their place (by definition, there are never fewer T10 or T20 schools). Rankings shifts are in NO way bad for law as a whole, are ordinary through good times and bad, and are categorical nonsense to bring up as the author did.

Emory deserves to drop another 50 arbitrary ranking spots for this professor's argument alone.

Look bro just cuz your school is a sinking ship doesn't mean you should castigate all over the posters ITT

RIP Duke, Emory, and Minnesota
