Top Law Schools

Hello, I know there are already some threads about this topic, but i wanted to get some advice specific to my situation.

I am trying to decide between UGA and State where I have received a scholarship offer at State and none at UGA. I have an engineering background and want to pursue IP law in Georgia. I would like to work in biglaw in Atlanta. I am in state and live within a commute distance to Georgia State, but would've to move to Athens if attending UGA.

The scholarship offer:
1st year: 10,000 for tuition
2nd & 3rd years: full tuition plus $2000 stipend each semester from a gra position

Georgia States COA for 3 years:$6000
UGA's COA for 3 years: $57000 before housing

I am not sure how much better UGA's employment prospects are compared to states, but would it outweigh the benefits of attending Georgia State on basically a full ride? I would definitely attend UGA if it gave me better employment prospects, as that would cover the 51000 difference in the long run.

Advice will be appreciated!

Have you told admissions at UGA about your scholarship at Georgia State? You would be doing yourself a disservice if you don't try to negotiate.

$51K is a pretty big gap IMO

I'm a UGA alum, and a fan of the school. Everyone I know that passed the patent bar got a great job from UGA. However, $50 grand plus is not a small chunk of change. It's going to come down to your risk aversion - UGA does give you a better shot at Atlanta biglaw, but that's a big price to pay. I'd second the above poster and recommend you talk to the school about it and see if they can get you some moola. UGA just announced some new scholarships that are full tuition plus stipend, so that might open up some dollars as everyone moves up a rung.

Did all of these people, who "passed the patent bar and got a great job," have an engineering degree, or were they from a variety of technical backgrounds?

Agreed with negotiate with UGA.

As it stands now, Georgia State. That is a huge difference for probably not a huge difference in job prospects.

Condo Roccia in Philly and Quinn in NY off the top of my head - electrical engineering and biology, respectively, I think. I know there were more that I can't think of atm.
