I've been looking for a thread like this...I know it's got to be out there!

I would love to see a thread that has the seals, mascots, and colors all rolled into one. I love the history behind why a school chooses Navy versus Cornflower blue.

What a novel idea. Well Ole Miss chooses cardinal red and navy blue because those are the colors of the confederacy. And before he was banned, Colonel Reb was a caricature of a confederate colonel. Now we have a blackbear mascot which i have no idea why.

Those colors were chosen to mirror the colors of Harvard and Yale.

That's probably the 'official' explanation, but you do realize they use to wave the confederate flag along with the mascot at the football games? They are also called the 'Rebels.' And their name is 'Ole Miss' which is what slaves called the wives of plantation owners. It's not hard to infer their intent.

The only reason they dropped the mascot and flag was so they could better recruit black football players.

I actually did know that, but I had never heard that they chose those colors in order to mirror the confederacy. It seems like that would be a dubious decision, given that the colors of the confederate flag and the U.S. flag are the same. If they really wanted to mirror the confederacy, they would have chosen gray as their school color. Anyway, I had always heard that Ole Miss chose red and blue because it fancied itself the "Harvard of the South"

I just don't see how the whole package could come together (mascot, name of college, name of sports teams, flag) without red and blue. Harvard's red is way more marroonish crimson anyway, doesn't come close to the ole miss red. Gray is not an attractive color for a college for obvious reasons.

Okay, after googling the founding year of ole miss, it appears it predates the Civil War. I'm wrong i've just been informed ole miss didn't adopt colors until 1893.

I'm truly fascinated by lawdork's obsession with wanting to associate Ole Miss with this, but how about you stop speculating about something you clearly know nothing about.

Right? i didn't think it would ignite such passion. I really thought this was a flame thread anyway.

Sooooo, not a flame thread at all. In choosing schools, we consider everything from the faculty-student ratio to the weather.

And now, the school colors. I noticed one thread had a ton of the seals. I wish I were more technically inclined to see about getting those into this thread. I'm serious. The color of the sweatshirt I could be wearing for years to come makes a difference to me.

I appreciate the historical inferences and explanations, but as long as we don't get toooooo off-track, it's cool. Maybe for now we can just post our favorites so it's all compiled in one thread.
