I'd probably go to Chicago (living in a city as opposed to Durham would be worth $5-10K/year subjectively for me already), but I'd also be wary of that much debt. Both schools will get you back to NYC. I don't think one option is clearly superior here. If you feel more comfortable at Chicago then its a fair choice.

I would take Duke, but I think Chi could be defensible here. That said, personality fit doesn't really make a great case to me. If your family/friends/professional network are all in Chicago, that could definitely make it worth it to stay. Especially with a child you'll likely need some support to help take care of during LS.

180k is a little more than I would feel comfortable with, but if you have family and a support system in Chicago, then I would go with UChi.
