if you have several years of experience as an engineer and are making a comfortable salary and your SO makes enough to put you through law school, why would you give up that living situation to spend your life savings and 3 years of your life on lawl school?

engineer -> law school is actually pretty balla though even considering the shit legal market and obama administration fcking around with scouts IP and whatnot. just having an engineering degree makes job search quite easier.
iirc research results showed that engineers ended up being the most successful lawyers relative to their numbers/scores compared to any other background

engineers run into glass ceilings quickly, especially those without masters/phds. also while chemical/electrical/cs engineering degree = guaranteed job other engineering disciplines are pretty shit although i guess it doesnt matter in tc's case

with respect to tc's question NYU, although either choice is perfectly justifiable.

Why do you think you want to do a federal clerkship?

Anyone have an idea wrt the differences in placement in secondary markets? Would I need to be high up in either class to get a secondary market/equally high? It's hard to say based on placement data since there is an element of self selection. Anecdotes appreciated!

This one is tougher because of your career goals and location preferences. Clerkship #s aren't great at either and govn't job prospects aren't great at either.

You should be able to get BL from either but I don't know if you would be able to get it in one of your prefered markets. So so many of NYU students go straight to NY and a bunch of NU students go to Chicago and NY (everyone sends people here as a fallback except for places like NYU and Columbia where it is the goto). Also employment #s aren't especially disparate (even if you give NYU's PI cred all its due and consider those good outcomes NU's business jobs from JD-MBA students counterbalance it). These two schools placement power in the T14 are probably the two most difficult because of NU's JD-MBAs and general preference for Chicago and NYU's PIs and general preference for the much easier market--NYC.

To some degree I think it matters how much you prefer Chicago over NYC as an ultimate location. SF and Boston are both tough small markets and DC is impossible. So Chicago and NYC are the much more likely and getable markets. If there is a real preference for Chicago for NYC then I think you should def. take NU (or not go) and hope to kill it on the grades, which would allow you to go anywhere.

Ultimately, I think you should follow the money and go to NU or not go. 180 in debt is just way too much for me to ever justify NYU but honestly 135 for NU isn't too hot either. 135 is a debt load that you can get away with, but it won't be the most fun.
