So i'm down to the wire with 2 choices

full tuition scholarship with no minimum gpa threshold at WUSTL
VS
$48k scholarship (including needbased aid) at UCLA

I'm from LA, would prefer practicing in LA over STL, and have somewhat wealthy parents / good finances
That being said theres an almost $100k difference in aid here. Although close in rankings UCLA seems to be significantly better in terms of job prospects. That being said I am an engineer w/ a masters so theres that.

please dont tell me to retake as although I have one retake left, the only 2 T14s that are options with my 3.0 are NU an GULC, and I'm not a huge fan of GULC. with my 3.0 171 i think its safe to say i overperformed my numbers w/ regards to scholly money from WUSTL and even getting accepted to UCLA was somewhat of a windfall

thanks!

How are you financing law school?

my parents are pretty wealthy and can easily afford to send me to law school even with no scholarship. that being said they are very "tough love" parents and on top of that i do like the concept of self sufficiency. my parents will probably pay for my housing/board and we'll end up splitting tuition half and half

So you would be graduating with no debt from WUSTL vs about 50k in debt from UCLA. Either one is defensible, sounds like your gut is telling you UCLA, I would listen to it.

Based on this, I would go with UCLA.

If that's per-year from UCLA, UCLA easily. But I don't think that would be a $100k difference. If that's total from UCLA, then WUSTL easily.

If your parents can even cover half of that, I'd just go to where I'm more comfortable.

Yea just go to UCLA, that's a pretty good deal for you all things considered, makes more sense to go to where u feel comfortable.

Edit: Sorry, that was uncalled for. Props to you for not wanting to waste your parents money.

I would choose ucla here. You want LA and I can't even imagine moving from Cali to practice law in St. Louis.

Both options are justifiable, but UCLA is the better choice since you can do internships & externships during law school that might lead to permanent employment in your targeted region. I did consider & factor in your parents' financial situation & generosity.

WashU does place people in New York and Chicago. Not a ton mind you, but you aren't necessarily bound to St.Louis employment from WashU.
If I were in your shoes, id probably go with WashU but that's just me.

Get your parents to directly give you the difference in the money they would have given you had you gone to UCLA, and then go to WUSTL.

When that plan fails, go to UCLA.

Go to UCLA. The value of a UCLA law degree in LA is worth more than 100k compared to the value of a WashU degree. This isn't even close.

If you could afford UCLA and want to stay in California, dosen't make sense to go anywhere else.

Sunny California > Whatever St. Louis has

lol i got waitlisted there. never officially withdrew but never signed up for that video submission thing out of disappointment/laziness
i know UCLA's really good at matching USC scholly's but i doubt i would have gotten much money from SC off the WL anyways...

Ok, I'll bite:

How did you get need-based aid at UCLA if you have wealthy parents?

UCLA, because you want LA and your parents are paying your way. Are you okay with making less coming out of law school than you would as an engineer?

If you had to pay your own way, I wouldn't go to either. WUSTL isn't likely to get you to LA, and if you miss out on biglaw at UCLA, you would be screwed. The employment prospects are pretty similar out of both schools, with UCLA placing a bit more in big law. http://www.lstscorereports.com/compare/ucla/washu/ I imagine far more people get completely fucked over coming out of UCLA than WUSTL because of the debt. If you don't get big law out of UCLA, you aren't going to be able to pay off that debt. But it's okay to miss biglaw out of WUSTL if you have a full tuition scholarship.
