How hard is it to live at home and commute from school? It would be a train ride away (like 30 min maybe).

And what would you say is the cost benefit analysis of living near school for like 60K over three years vs. at home?

it's worth the 60k imo.

that's 3 years of your life (bout 4% of the avg life span) when you are at the youngest

This is something only you can answer, based on your relationship with your family and your tolerance for a commute of that nature.

It's up to you but if I had the option I might take the savings. You can always live on campus or closer to campus 2L and 3L year if you find it doesn't work for you.

Okay, but can you go over what you think the cost is. I have heard you lose out socially and potentially academically.

This is terrible advice. Living at home for 3 years in your 20s is an awful idea for 95% of law students. DF is just bitter as usual, and completely full of shit given that he didn't live at home

Probably socially.

Academically you might do better. I think that really depends on the person and atmosphere. I don't think the commute is that big of a deal. The bigger question is whether you can study at home without distractions.

Only you can answer this but I would be extremely reluctant to do it. The only question is where you can study best without distractions. For me, that is definitely not at home.

1L year is not the time to experiment to the above who said you can move for 2L/3L if it doesn't work.

I live at home this year (I'm a 1L) and have no complaints. My commute is 20-30 minutes depending on the weather and construction; and it really isn't that bad.

Taking cost out of the question, I would not live at home. It depends on how debt-averse you are, OP.

40 minute commute here. It hurts your social life at law school, which is unquestioningly a good thing.

I think the decision would be easier if we knew how much you were paying for lawschool. Getting a full ride? You can splurge on the 60k. Paying sticker then you should try to minimize that debt load as much as you can. Of course going for PI etc., is also a potential factor.

This is a personal decision.

P.S. Very understandable, however, if your family home is in Manhattan due to the high rental rates.

Depending on your family I guess you might also get some benefits such as home cooked meals and laundry, which would save time

So here's the whole consideration. I live in NYC, about 30 min from Columbia. I currently have a 60K Scholarship, but I also have a 177K Scholarship from Cornell.

The only way Columbia really makes sense financially is if I live at home (It will make it a 60K difference which Columbia is worth), but if this is going to cause a real loss in grades and social life, then that would be a problem.

I will note, I know a lot of people in the neighborhood, so if I have to stay late, I could always stay by them for the night. And I might be able to gain access to a shuttle that will bring me near home almost every night, so might be able to avoid the subway.

Another benefit of Columbia: I live in NYC, so I could potentially TA at Columbia on the side during the summers potentially and make an extra 1500-3000 bucks.

If you want Columbia & your family home is in NYC, then it is a perfectly reasonable option, in my opinion.

Bro, just bike it to Morningside Heights. Manhattan has become a lot safer for cyclists in recent years and you may cut down your commute. What neighborhood do you live in?

LOL at 30 minute commute. That's less than the average New Yorker commutes to go to work on a daily basis where they have to work longer hours than school.

LIVE AT HOME. I would have done it if I had the option. I would still live at home now while working, if I had the option. MONEY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ALL.

And if my mother wants to cook, clean, do laundry for me, why the fuck not? I only see benefits. Living on your own is overrated assuming you don't have psycho parents. I moved out at 17 but goddamn life was easy living at home.
