Top Law Schools

A good friend of mine is in the process of deciding what to do. I already told him retake is a must please retake! However, he wants to still keep the door open on this cycle. He is undocumented if that has any impact on advice (he cannot get federal loans and would need to find a private lender for the loans) and wants to work in immigration. The real question here is on the advice I should ultimately offer him. I have already told him to retake and not waste his GPA but if he insists on attending law school I feel like Irvine is worth the 15-20K more than Hastings and I just dont feel comfortable suggesting anyone goes to Golden Gate unless they have a job already lined up. Just checking if this is on par with what others would advise since this is the blind leading the blind as I am a 0L as well. I know the answer is retake by a mile, I already expressed that but.....

Hastings: 208K (10K/year)
Irvine: 225K (Sticker) (Still on the wait list)
Golden Gate: 110K (45K 1L, 35K 2-3L)

- California (LA or Bay preference but anywhere in Cali)
- Any PI work, Immigration law
-145/3.9
-Once

His only option should be a retake with those numbers and options.

Tell him it is an absolute shame he is wasting his GPA on these options. Irvine is a good choice to staying in LA/OC but not at sticker. A retake even in the high 150s could have him at a T25 with $$$.

also irvine isn't a real choice. There isn't "still on the waitlist." There's just "on the waitlist." the former implies some chance of acceptance, while technically true, cannot be evaluated now.

He studied and he tried his best. The test got the best of him that day. He knows he is better than that score which is all the more reason to retake. When I direct him to this forum hopefully it just confirms what he already knows he needs to do.

Going to waste a 3.9 to pay $110k for Golden Gate or Hastings and have non-PSLF eligible loans to boot? That would suuuuuuck.

Sit down and do the math with him on how long those loans would actually take to pay off and what his monthly payments would be. I'm not even sure those are eligible for IBR/PAYE? If he could get a job at all it would likely pay <$50k so think about quality of life when you are making $3000 a month and have $2000 in loan payments.

This should motivate him to retake and should be a clear sign for him.

Depending on what sub-field of PI your friend wants, they need to know that most PI work is very limited, severely underfunded, its hiring is irregular, and there is not a lot of elasticity in the PI labor market. The best PI gigs hire from the best law schools. Period. Go to the best school with the best scholarship, otherwise they will be struggling to 1) pay their debt and 2) find a job.

wow didn't think that was possible. seems bizarre to have someone practice law when each day they are breaking the law. How do they even apply for law school? if i remember correctly, you had to check you were a US citizen or fill in your visa info for the apps, although maybe I am all wrong on this too. Sometimes I assume we live in a country where laws actually mean something. /rant
