I am PI minded and have no interest in biglaw. Doing defense work is appealing to me as well.

my options are full rides at third tiers in California and Nebraska or less money at higher ranked schools in NYC and CA

It depends what schools these are, but you may want to rethink law or take the full ride if you will not be convinced the law field is not for you.

In order to receive feedback in this forum, please provide all of the following:

-The schools you are considering
-The total Cost of Attendance (COA) of each. COA = cost of tuition + fees + books + cost of living (COL) + accumulated interest - scholarships.
-How you will be financing your COA, i.e. loans, family, or savings
-Where you are from and where you want to work, and other places where you have significant ties (if any)
-Your general career goals
-Your LSAT/GPA numbers
-How many times you have taken the LSAT
