Will be financing primarily with loans.

COA:
Michigan - $126,030 (90k total scholarship)
UVA - $137,469 (90k total scholarship)
Berkeley - $231,522 (sticker)
NYU - $251,116 (sticker)

Notes - Planning to apply for Berkeley matching scholarship. Applied for Root Tilden Kern from NYU, but assuming sticker for both schools right now.

I'm from Hawaii. I want to end up working in public interest on the west coast. LOVED Berkeley when I visited, but I am not sure it's worth the extra cost. Did my undergrad in New York City and wouldn't mind going back. Visiting the other two schools is not really feasible from Hawaii, which makes it more difficult. Low 170s LSAT, 3.7x GPA. Took the LSAT once.

This is easy: NYU is 6th, UVA is 8th, Berkeley is 9th and UMich is 10th. So, its a close one, but NYU wins by 2.

In all seriousness, UMich at that COA is probably most fitting of your goals. However, I strongly urge you to press NYU for scholarship money. You likely won't get the RTK, but with 170+ and 3.7 you are a serious contender for at least some $. Good luck. You are in a great position for success.

Thread is premature. I highly doubt you get no money from Berk or NYU.

As it stands, NYU has the best ins into PI among your choices and their LRAP is supposed to be pretty good but the idea of sticker debt makes me nauseous. Given those choices, I'd take UVA, it's worth the extra ~10k over Michigan imo.

west coast PI reeks of berkeley, but out-of-state sticker is plain bananas.

i agree: press NYU big-time for money, and really harp on your PI. i bet they'll budge, even if you don't get RTK.

tbh these seem like modest outcomes given low 170s + 3.7x + current admissions climate.

i'm at nyu and can tell you pi is taken very seriously here (in fact, just finished pilc fair this afternoon)
i'd start negotiating w/ berk and nyu, leverage your mich and uva offers if possible
where are you in the fin aid process? have you gotten your initial award letter?

I think the UVA and Mich schollies seems in line with what most candidates with low 170s and 3.7X GPA have been offered so far on LSN. Seems like Mich and UVA are offering 75-90K for the candidates that they are offering scholarships to with those numbers.

Thanks for the NYU perspective. I haven't gotten initial award letters from Berkeley or NYU. My understanding is that if you apply for RTK, NYU waits until you're turned down for that (in March) to make a scholarship offer.

I haven't applied for Berk's matching scholarship program yet, because I wanted to wait until I had more offers in hand from the other schools on their matching list to which I've been accepted (Duke and Cornell).

I think the UVA and Mich schollies seems in line with what most candidates with low 170s and 3.7X GPA have been offered so far on LSN. Seems like Mich and UVA are offering 75-90K for the candidates that they are offering scholarships to with those numbers.

Yeah, based on the LSN profiles with similar numbers, 90k from Mich and UVA is above the median grant offered.

That was a thread specific to DC and biglaw, but there were a few posters that explicitly stated or implied that NYU loses a lot of the edge it has over the lower T14 when seeking employment outside of NYC. It may be different for West Coast and PI than for DC and biglaw though, do you have thoughts you would like to share?

I should've elaborated: I think it's fair to say that NYU and Berk are on equal footing when it comes to west coast PI. Therefore, if OP gets more $ at Berk I would probably go there because there are a lot of ancillary benefits of going to school in your target region. I simply disagreed with you that it was an easy decision (i.e. not something to overthink).
