I'm from upstate NY. Would ultimately like to return here. Do I Need T14 (I have the stats for in without money)?

I can say anecdotally that people at my school (non-T14 and approx. 800-1,000 miles from upstate NY) have been able to return there with good grades (law review) + the fact that they are from there. I would guess that it is even easier if you attend a NY non-t14.

Can't imagine any of the jobs in upstate NY being very high paying, Cornell seems like overkill (unless you can go there on a full ride or something). I'd probably just roll with whatever regional school is closest to that region (isn't there a school in Buffalo?). As long as its cheap and you're cool with the job prospects from there, that seems to be the best bet.

I'm in Rochester. My family has a long standing chain of franchises and other things. My ultimate goal is to become their in-house counsel. I'm concerned about quality of education: I need to be able to apply what I learn.

My stats are pretty much the medians of Columbia.

Syracuse, Albany, and SUNY Buffalo all have BigLaw placement~6/7%, so I'm really not sure what the play might be here.

Maybe go through a couple of the law firms on this list: http://bestlawfirms.usnews.com/search.a ... te_code=NY and see where associates and partners come from to get an idea

bills, you debt financing?
where have you applied/gotten in/gotten money?

quality of education will be fine at all the top schools, won't be able to apply it from day one, though. ls doesn't teach you the day to day

guaranteed job with the company?

if yes, would you (a) be joining an established legal dept or (b) be on your own?

if no, what's your plan before going in-house. biglaw? something else?

Yeah I said that off the cuff. Didn't relize upstate NY had a legal market of note.

Totes agree, if upstate big law is the goal then definitely don't go to Buffalo. I would zero in on Cornell.

I lived in rochester the last handful years and am at Cornell-honestly theres just no "good" regional if you want to return to upstate and get a relatively high paying position (>70k). You can roll the dice at Buffalo, Albany, or the like-but you better be going for free and know you're going to have to kill it. I would say you're gunna want to stick with the NY t-14's as the gap between them and the regional is HUGE in placement power. After those for reasonable price I'd say full ride at Buffalo. OP if you're median for Columbia you might be in the 150k+ scholly camp from cornell and that would be a no brainer for your goals

Optimally, upstate biglaw. I know attending a t-14 is my best option, I just wasn't sure if Cornell would give me a better chance than Duke, Penn, etc.

i don't have a direct answer to your question, don't want to speculate (sure feels like cornell should place better in buff, but i don't know from experience)
if no one chimes in here, i'd shoot an e-mail to some cornell alum working upstate and see what they think

for shits and giggles i went through attorney profiles on some buffalo biglaw sites
absolutely dominated by buffalo grads with latin honors
(tho, of course, you can't assume you'll graduate with latin honors)
a smattering of other ny schools, usually with honors – st johns, syracuse, albany, fordham
and a healthy number of t14s

How does a ~172/3.7 not get major money at Cornell?

If you have median stats at Columbia, you should be able to get lots and lots of money from Cornell. Cornell also has the advantage of apparently being less than 2 hours away from Rochester. If I were you, I'd apply to all the T14 and then leverage acceptances to get maximum money from Cornell.
