Probably depends on which part of the south you're talking about.
The big firms in Mississippi, where I live, just take the top 10 percent from the two law schools here in Mississippi, Ole Miss and Mississippi College (and some surrounding states such as Bama).
Perhaps there were no people from MS that went to Harvard that those firms could hire from (it goes without saying that MS is very nativist in hiring and well, everything else). There is one Harvard Law grad at the biggest firm in the state and 23 that went to Mississippi College, the state TTT.
I'm sure it's probably different for like Atlanta or Charlotte, which are also the south.
