Why does it matter if you go to a "top" firm? Cornell would give you a great shot at NYC biglaw.

Don't ED to NYU. I love it here and it's a great school, but they don't give any ED boost at all.
Both Penn and UVA do, but I'd probably apply RD. You'll get into one, I'd bet, although you'll probably have to ride a waitlist.
Cornell places a pretty high percentage of its class into top firms, so idk where you got that idea from.

Applying ED is one of the worst decisions you can make. Just apply and let the chips fall. If you want NYC Cornell would be just as good as UVA and the risk of paying sticker if you ED to NYU or Penn isn't worth the boost.

Hey. so not to sound harsh (this is the internet after all), but how have you taken the LSAT 3x as a k-jd. they should stop letting people take the test as like sophomores in college. It's such a trap and it discourages people from taking time to enter the work world and see whether they actually want to head back to graduate school or practice law. Its also so much easier to take it after you graduate.
I think applying early decision as a k-jd, to a $60K/year law program (and attending), with a 3.9 GPA would be the worst decision of your life. I mean actually, the worst decision of your life. And I say this partly as a compliment, since it seems like you've made pretty good decisions up until now, aside from impatiently and prematurely maxing out on the LSAT.
You should take your stellar grades and get another type of gig in government, as a paralegal, or at a consulting firm. Failing that, apply broadly and hope that you pick up a lower T14 with a decent scholarship.

OP, I was in your identical spot 2 years ago. 167/4 K-JD maxed out retakes, wanted to go right away. TLS talked me into waiting and it was the best call of my life. I bumped up to 174 and went from almost committing to USC with $15k a year 2 years ago to S this year. Don't ED anywhere. Retake and get WE. If I could, I'd honestly go back and get more work/life experience before starting law school.

FWIW, I had a 167, 4.05 and ED'd UVA, and got 60k. It worked out - I was a bit above-median and got a big law job. BUT, I still think it was a mistake - a 170 would've allowed me to go to UVA for free.... I'd be in the same boat, only debt-free

So I'm the 167 who did the same thing. There's no explanation or justification that isn't superseded by "retake" - w/ that said, ED UVA would give him 45-60k scholly, and a great chance at Biglaw. My point being, it's a bit of a hyperbole to call it the "worst mistake ever" in the grand scheme of one's life

Why does he get 45k-60k?

gee that's funny
because i just ran a search for every ED candidate admitted to UVA on lawschoolnumbers
and 5% of those admits reported getting a scholly
want to try again?

Did you miss the part about me applying ED and getting 60k. TO BE CLEAR: I'm not advocating this (and as I said I would go back and change my decision) - all I'm saying is OP won't face the gallows for doing so

5% big dog
I got 60K off the wait list at UVA but from what I understand that is somewhat rare.
Saying ED UVA=45-60K is irresponsible broham

What exactly is the max numbr of retakes?

166/3.9. I've taken the LSAT the max amount of times, so I can't retake. K-JD, Decent softs, internship with US House of Representatives, fluent in Spanish, internships with law firms during undergrad.
My top career choice is NYC biglaw, followed by biglaw anywhere else.
Which one of NYU, Penn, or UVA would I be most suited for by applying Early Decision? My chances of getting in RD are slim, but my chances at the lower T-14 RD are looking solid. Would it be worth it probably paying sticker at NYU Penn or UVA in order to get NYC biglaw? As i understand it, it's a lot harder to get into the top law firms in NYC as a Cornell grad or Georgetown. Also, it seems like scholarship offers at the lower T-14 probably wouldn't be extremely substantial, so if I'm going to pay sticker, why not do it at a T-6 school?
You can't retake this cycle. That is an enormous difference from not being able to retake.
If you go down this path, your future self will kick your ass on a regular basis for decades to come.
You are trying to head down the K-JD path, which is already generally an unwise decision. You are planning on going into NYC BigLaw. You have absolutely no idea what that really entails, and yet you are talking about shackling yourself with a debt load that will force you to keep doing it, no matter how much you might hate it, for at least 5 years, and that is only if you are one of the few who actually succeeds in keeping with an aggressive payment schedule. Otherwise, your best case scenario is that you are paying your law school loans until you are 35. That is as far forward in the future as 4th grade was in the past. And plenty of people who start out in BigLaw end up stretching payments out over 20 or more years.
Blanket every NYC BigLaw firm with your resume and get a job as a paralegal. You will make good money, get a clue about what it is you think you want to sign up for, and be able to retake. (Not only that, the experience should help you when OCI rolls around because you won't be completely making stuff up in interviews.)
There really isn't a world where your future self wouldn't like an extra $150k and a lot less stress.
