NYU or Chicago

~60k in scholarships at NYU, with an additional 12 if I have a PI position during 2A summer. ~50k at Chicago. I'd prefer to live and work in NYC once I'm done. I'd probably end up doing biglaw for a few years to service the debt. After that, who knows. I was pretty set on NYU, yet it seems to be held in a worse light on these boards than Chicago. Is there any particular reason for that, or any reason I should choose Chicago and mess up my plans? As far as I can tell their biglaw and clerkship placement is practically identical to NYU. I do think Chicago has better professors, but I also have no interest in law and economics or THE RIGOR.

Chicago probably has a little bit better employment prospects, but they are essentially peers. I would go to whichever one was cheaper and whichever school I would be happier at. Nothing wrong with choosing either. If you have paid a deposit on an apartment and are really set on NYU, just go to NYU.

I don't see how Chicago would make more sense than NYU if you want to work in NYC.

I read some old thread where some guy argued fairly persuasively that Chicago's small class size (and the fact that relatively fewer people from there want NYC) gives them a slight advantage over NYU/Columbia.

If you want NYC, come to NYU. 1) more alumni network in the city, 2) if you haven't lived in NYC, you won't have to answer questions as to why you want to come work here, 3) this isn't about placement, but having a ton of your classmates in the city after grad seems pretty cool

things that don't matter:
professors
tls prestige
law and economics
rigor

things that matter:
placement
cost

deciding between uchi and nyu at essentially equal cost (more money at nyu but higher col) for nyc biglaw, it isn't close imo
come join us in the village

also how did you manage putting off this decision for so long, did you get that money off wl?
also, numbers?

If you wanted to end up anywhere else, I'd say Chicago. But you don't. Go to NYU.

NYC V20s dip lower into UChis class than NYUs so that cuts toward Chi imo. Some firms come to NYU that don't come to our OCI however (Cahill, Wilkie, Schulte, Kramer, and Orrick come to mind so that favors NYU a bit. I would choose Chicago (obviously lol) but both make sense.

Those firms have essentially some of the largest class sizes for non t25% students and are perfect for near median students. I'm sure Chicago has the same thing for for Chicago located/focused firms. Thus, if you want NYC --> NYU

also NYU has more money to spend b/c we have fucking 90 person class sizes. To make up for it, our professors are pretty amazing. But this is stupid to consider.

Chicago opens up two major markets and is cheaper. NYU only opens up one. Even assuming neither are a degree factory, which isn't the case, Chicago is the better option.

Go to NYU. 3 more years in the city you want to be in, great firm placement in the city, the ability to network, and a good answer to the "Why New York" question that occasionally comes up.

biggest thing people should value more at the margins is the 3 years the location/culture of school they are spending their last 3 years of freedom in before giving their life up to biglaw because LS gives you absurd amounts of free time (maybe less as a 2L b/c journals? dunno)

The cost difference between NYU and Chicago is not a marginal thing.

it is after 10k initial scholarship difference + in case of no 2L SA OCI giving you 6.5k (PI stipend) + 12k (NYU additional scholarship) = same as earning biglaw money that summer...I think.

Which school is a supposed "diploma mill" should be a greater concern over where you spend three years of your life?

Agreed; that shit sucks. I hated having 90 people in my 1L classes.

But, personally, I'd take that over living in Chicago vs NYC

Those firms don't come to UChi because they can't get any of our students. Like 95% of the people targeting NY end up in V20s. If you are median and targeting NY I guarantee it feels better at chi than nyu.

You choose NYU here for PI, scholarship differential, or cultural reasons, not big law placement in any market.
