UCONN Full Scholly vs GEORGETOWN Sticker

Currently planning on attending UConn on a full scholarship with no stipulations. (housing not covered)
Was just offered a spot from the GTown waitlist and will apply for Need Based Aid (low EFC so I may get something that way).

My goals are all PI related specifically legal aid.
From NY and hope to live here post law school but willing to live nearby.

Any insights are welcomed.

If you would be ok with Legal Aid in CT, then UConn on a full scholarship should be fine. Don't pay sticker at Georgetown no matter what.

To pick Georgetown you would need to be very confident that PSLF will continue to exist in its current state. Or at least that by obtaining loans now you will be grandfathered into the old system.

What's your LSAT/GPA?

I'm a 1L at Georgetown in a few weeks and I'm excited about it. That said, I wouldn't do it at sticker in a million years.

Actually maybe ask your grandparents? I found out after they died my grandparents were way richer than they let on. I think most old people likely horde money worried they think they'll live forever but also would be delighted to assist in helping you out with something as important as this. I think you need to get about 65k to make it worth it.

Did you just casually suggest borrowing over 50k from parents or grandparents? It seems like if that were an option, it would be mentioned already.

 no. You can borrow at a pretty fair rate easily from the government. I sure as shit wouldn't "borrow" investable money from relatives. I'm suggesting asking the relatives to fund him a bit

Sitting out and retaking the LSAT makes infinitely more sense than hoping parents/grandparents just happen to have tens of thousands of dollars under the mattress they want to give you.

I just think people are sometimes too proud to ask for help or don't recognize the resources they have. This is a huge decision and those who care about you might be more willing to use their dollars to push you towards a good position (Georgetown) than you might expect.

OP, assuming we ignore the idiotic suggestion that your family is rich without your being aware, I think you need an actual COA for GULC here. I find it unlikely that they'd give you enough need-aid to make it worth your while, but we need an actual figure to assess this. If it's sticker or near-sticker, then no to GULC, regardless of your retake status. That's very irresponsible.

Okay so my fam is def not rich and won't be contributing a dime. My gpa is 3.4 and lsat is 162 (URM). Took the lsat back in 2011 so I think I can retake but I was pretty set on going to law school for free because of my legal aid goal and Connecticut is pretty close to NY so I wont turn down UConn.

The Georgetown at sticker is only swaying me because I am set on PI and they have a great reputation for PI and living in DC >>>>> living in Hartford. Also the lrap/pslf route is something I am taking anyway (for COL loans) so the Georgetown debt seems more manageable considering I plan on going that route anyway ( I know it means i'm constricted to PI/ banking on gov policies but either way im doing that).

NYC legal aid is almost dream job status and I think GULC gives me a better shot but Conn legal aid is the safer bet but locks me out of NYC.

But I agree that I should wait to see the aid package from GULC before I think further.

How much money do yall think it would take to make GULC a better choice?

Figure that it will be just as difficult getting NYC legal aid from UConn as it will from GULC. NYU would give you a pretty substantial advantage, but that's not in the cards at this point. That said, it certainly could be with a solid retake. A 162/3.4 gives you a lot of upward mobility in the LSAT department. Even if you can only pull that up to a 166-167 or so, that'd drastically improve your options.

Long story short, UConn is not a bad choice if you absolutely must attend this year. If you're willing to wait it out, retake the LSAT, and apply again next cycle, I think you could do better.

Why do you say this? When I looked at their bios online they all seem to graduate from lower ranked schools but above UConn? Would GULC name and rank not give me a better shot?

Not for legal aid, no. There are institutional benefits that make GULC a more attractive choice (particularly a year's worth of decent funding post-graduation in the likely event you end up in a volunteer spot for a while) but you kind of have to rinse the "TLS" out of your system if you're going for low-prestige PI. For biglaw and federal clerkships, the school name matters a lot. You can see the large disparity between T14 schools and the regional schools.

A legal aid society would much, much rather have a Cardozo grad that has demonstrated PI work experience, a year's worth of volunteer time in the office, Spanish language skills, and shitty grades than an NYU grad in the top 5% of their class + LR who's never stepped foot in a legal aid office.
