Top Law Schools

Today one of my close friends told me about his decision to decline his offer at Uchicago, and to go a Chicago local TT (something like Loyola/Depaul/Chicago-Kent), and transfer after the first year.

His rationale behind this would be to go to the cheaper school for one year, so he could save up on tuition (he is paying out of his own pocket), and then transfer to Uchicago. I would usually advise him against something so risky, since the options out of a TT is completely different from those out of Uchicago (or NU for that matter).

However, he claimed that he has been accepted to Uchicago, and that would make transferring easier. Do you guys know if he is right on that? I have no idea how transfer applications work - I thought they only look at 1L grades, as opposed to LSAT and UGPA. But I could be totally wrong. And I believe if he actually needs to save money, then he can always apply for scholarships or loans at Uchicago - which would end up being cheaper than transferring and paying sticker at both.

But that is just my speculation, since I really have not thought about the issue. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

That's incredibly stupid. Transfer students often (although not always) struggle at OCI and she would need to have exceptional grades to transfer anyways.

No that is not how transferring works. This is one of the stupidest ideas ever posted on TLS.
She should go to Chicago.
If she isn't number 1 in her class she will have blown her legal career.

there are multiple posters who got were admitted to school A, went to school B, then couldn't transfer into school A as a rising 2L
also usnwr looks at incoming 1L numbers, not transfers
so 1L gpa is decisive

also she'd be paying sticker at both, wtf?

Are you sure this person isn't lying about getting into Chicago, so he's playing it as his "choice" not to go?

I have no idea if she is paying sticker (or anything) at her TT. But conventional wisdom seems to be that she will be paying sticker as a transfer student at Uchicago, no?

I don't know...if that is the case, then it has nothing to do with me then. I am just trying to help her not make an awful decision in her life. But I don't want to give my opinion before doing some fact checking on TLS.

I guess it is not important...let's just assume she is going to TT for free (for the purpose of the argument).
But if that is NOT how transferring works, then that would be a horrible, horrible situation for her to land herself in.

It is my problem...I changed the gender to protect her identity...but I guess it was too late...

Yeah, after this discussion I think it is most likely what happened. It was just hard for me to fathom on the spot, as in I tried to believe whatever I was told...

Well, she does want to stay in Chicago for that matter. But then again, she could have gotten some serious money at NU if she really needed money to that extent.

Well, technically - she is starting at her TT very soon (if not already). So I guess it is not her intention to retake...
Then I can only hope her the best of luck with whatever...

I have more than one friend who "chose" GW over GULC when they never actually got into GULC, or "was on the waitlist" at Harvard but ended up at Stetson because they "had a scholarship there." People really like to exaggerate their options for some reason. There's a real good chance your friend is trying to make himself look good; might be best just to let him have his little thing and not push it.
