GRADES VS. GPA

I have a 3.7 GPA, but I got a D in one of my classes. Will top 15 law schools care that I got a D if my GPA is still a 3.7?
I have a 165 LSAT.
Please advise!

GPA is all that matters
but i bet youll strike out everywhere in the T14 with a 3.7/165
A few points would increase your chance dramatically

Yes, you're right. I am working on increasing my score to a 170, taking a test masters course. I am just so nervous about this D.

Yes, ultimate goal with this would be a 180.
Should I write an explanation letter about the D though? Looks so bad on my transcript next to all my good grades.

It may just be better to let it slide in and hope they don't notice rather than draw attention to it.

Agreed - better to let the D slide in. If you get tense and make a big deal of it, it'll just hurt you more.

you answered this way better than I was going to try to
but yeah,
don't write an addendum. don't bring it up.

Ok thank you everyone!! I feel a lot better going into my LSAT class now.

Especially if it's your first time. If you don't mention it, odds are they won't even notice your shortcomings while they're sliding over the D. The whole thing will go much more smoothly that way, even if they decide not to call you back.

Should probably just move this thread to the lounge at this point.

No one will care about your D, unless you just start swinging it around in ad comm's faces.

I dunno. A lot people say that having that big D on your record doesn't matter much. Personally, I think that's overly hopeful talk made mostly to make the person feel better about their D.
Nothing you can do to change it, though. Gotta make the best of what you got.

well, what prof gave you the D? since law is prestige-oriented, i imagine the prestige of the D you received will matter quite a bit. a prestigious D would have been fine, but a TTT D would have set you back for sure.

I hope you're being sarcastic, but if not (or if OP doesn't think so)..
OP, the D DOES NOT MATTER. However, bringing it up in an addendum and rattling off a bunch of excuses WILL make you look bad. Schools care about (1) your GPA and (2) your LSAT score. Do you know why? Because thats what US NEWS LOOKS AT! There is no "number of students with Ds" category. They might notice/care if you failed some classes, but 1 D is nothing man.
T14 schools will reject you because your LSAT is 165, NOT because you have a D. And yes, 170/3.7 will get you some T14 love, even with the D.

Derp. I just read the previous few posts and that became embarrassingly obvious. Still, OP seems pretty neurotic about his D and I felt bad.
OP, there's more to being accepted than just your D. Remember that, no matter who you show it to.

Reading this in Archer's voice makes it so much better.
Also, is the OP nervous about
his D or about
receiving a D?
Or could it be both?

So unfair. He was f*cked the first time he got the D, and now it's gonna f*ck him again.
Hopefully future employers don't ask for transcripts, or this D is going to keep nailing him over and over again.
...I just wanted to contribute to this hilarious thread.

Where did you get 'top 15' from? None of the cool kids say that. And besides, who the heck is #15??
