0L family,

Forgive the long note...and thanks for taking the time to read this;

I am interested in Entertainment Law. I am at an impasse and would appreciate any comments and insights...

COLUMBIA LAW (awaiting aid scholarship)

Good IP Law focus with arts and media bent.
Relative ease of obtaining Biglaw corporate experience
New York Arts + Media industry
Strong alumni ( including noted studio heads)
Inspiring classmates
International reputation

BERKELEY LAW ( $90,000 + fin aid )

Strongest IP program in the US, though focused on Tech, I think.
No grades!
Relative proximity to the entertainment industry
Good alumni presence in industry
Less debt once I leave school
Weather
good job prospects?

UCLA (full tuition)

#1 for Entertainment and film law.
Location
Alumni connections
Entertainment law specialisation
Weather
No tuition debt
Job prospects not as strong

Thus far I am drawn to Columbia because of the Biglaw opportunities and the name. I am curious as to what the threshold would be for aid money before Columbia becomes a financially tenable option. Thanks for reading, 0L family! you guys are awesome!

No one can give you a good answer until you receive your Columbia financial aid package.

Given Berkeley's offer, UCLA is out. Now it depends on what Columbia offers.

You sound a bit on the insufferable side, not sure if that will help or hurt your ambitions (guessing it will probably help in the entertainment industry)

What is black letter training? You think the Rule against Perpetuities will be taugh better at Columbia than at UCLA?

Wow! 'a bit on the insufferable side', haha. You garnered all that from my post did you? 'guessing it will probably help in the entertainment industry'. Ah, the yawning chasms of impending, self-evident irony. Wait foor it...

hahah.

Thanks, for your post, anyway!

You sound like you'd fit in best at Columbia. Berkeley and UCLA people may not inspire you enough.

thanks for the weigh-in. I have just been impressed by some of CLS's past/present students...it just seems a great place to be pushed.
Do/did you attend Berkeley? If so could you kindly elaborate on why you think Berkeley students might not be inspirational?

I clicked on this thread, expecting to help extinguish a huge dilemma, and am instead met with a self-aggrandizing insufferable douche-twat of an OP. So basically things went better than expected.

Point: Columbia.

Given your emphasis on prestige and the fact that you went to Oxbridge and HYP, you are probably not awash in poverty like many others on this board, so go to Columbia - at the very least it's the 4th Ivy and not 'Gasp' a public school full of hippies. Also California might be the place for the stars, but the major corporate boards of the entertainment industry are almost entirely headquartered in NY, so Columbia is much closer to the decision making process of the industry.

COLUMBIA LAW (awaiting aid scholarship)

I have an Oxbridge, and top 3 Ivy League degree, and I am sort of drawn to the label (I know)
Great IP Law focus with arts and media bent.
Relative ease of obtaining Biglaw corporate experience (apparently one has to earn one's stripes in Biglaw before making the lateral transition)
New York Arts + Media scene
Strong alumni ( including noted studio heads)
Inspiring classmates
International reputation
Good film school

BERKELEY LAW ( Dean's Fellowship ($90,000) + fin aid )

Strongest IP program in the US, though focused on Tech, I think.
No grades!
Relative proximity to the entertainment industry
Name ?! (not so sure about reputation)
Good alumni presence in industry
Less debt once I leave school
Weather

UCLA (Dean's scholarship (full tuition))

#1 for Entertainment and film law, hands down.
Location
Alumni connections
Entertainment law specialisation
Weather
No tuition debt once I leave school
Great film school
Job prospects not as strong

Berkeley does have grades in the sense that 10% receive HH, 30% receive H, and the rest receive P (or something like that). It's basically A, A-, B. I do agree that Berkeley transcripts probably look better if you're at the bottom of the class--that's not insignificant.

Anyway, the real answer is that CLS is stingy and won't top your 90k scholarship.

That CLS is stingy is not at all lost on me...but I think you are right on the no grades thing. It is probably a bit more deceptive than it might seem.

How did you attend Oxbridge with no money? They rarely if ever give scholarship to international students and the tuition is something upwards of 20,000 pounds. Did you get a Rhode or something?
