Yeah, could you clarify OP. Is it more money isn't an issue i'm just looking for best QOL + east coast? Or is it, I don't want money to be the main driving force but if one offer is much better I have to take it? Or can you give us some more guidance here?cotiger wrote:If money's not really an issue and you're primarily looking for QOL + east coast, then I'd say NYU.
It would be closer to $210-250k, more likely. But yeah, it's a lot of cash.lecsa wrote:Chicago.
300k for sticker at the other schools is crazy even if you are paying out of pocket with no loans (think of it as lost investment income).
If you're taking out loans it's around 300k right?ph14 wrote:It would be closer to $210-250k, more likely. But yeah, it's a lot of cash.lecsa wrote:Chicago.

OP is going (hopefully) sans loans. So that saves him a bit on interest.lecsa wrote:If you're taking out loans it's around 300k right?ph14 wrote:It would be closer to $210-250k, more likely. But yeah, it's a lot of cash.lecsa wrote:Chicago.

So if not, then 260k?
If you had that money invested, then you could probably make a good chunk of interest. So negative about 300k.
What about investment income from that cash. He'd probably lose out on a lot of return.ph14 wrote:OP is going (hopefully) sans loans. You don't mention if you tried to leverage Columbia? Also, how strongly did you ask for a match? Did you try something along the lines of "If I get my scholarship matched, I will attend NYU" (or wherever) or did you just say "Hey, Chicago gave me $45k. Can you give me some money?"mmoffx wrote:More the former - money isn't really an issue - but obviously any help is attractive in the face of 200-300K out of pocket, even sans loans.ph14 wrote:Yeah, could you clarify OP. If $45k isn't a particularly large amount for you (which it sounds like it isn't), then definitely pick NYU. Chicago winters are brutal, you're far from your SO, and the atmosphere of the school is the opposite of chill and down to earth.mmoffx wrote:More the former - money isn't really an issue - but obviously any help is attractive in the face of 200-300K out of pocket, even sans loans.ph14 wrote:Yeah, could you clarify OP. Stupid and crazy if you're paying for it with loans, sure. If you can pay the $250k in cash, then QOL factors can easily be worth $45k.lecsa wrote: I think it's stupid and crazy to take CCN with no money over CCN with $, but whatever. Even with your parents paying it, it comes out of your inheritance.
Or to invest it and make more money while getting a cheaper law school education at an institution of equal caliber.cotiger wrote:Stupid and crazy if you're paying for it with loans, sure. That's the whole point of having money: to spend it on shit you want.
Sure, just send them an email talking about how you would love to attend CLS, but you have to make sure that it makes financial sense for you, considering Uchi's offer and the high COL in NYC.mmoffx wrote:thnx for the responses -- I didn't try to leverage columbia yet, just got the award (or lack of award) - I did more of a "hey other schools gave me $" - is it worth it to re-appeal with something stronger?ph14 wrote: You don't mention if you tried to leverage Columbia? I would. You have nothing to lose. I think that my action item list would be to either (1) try and leverage Columbia; (2) see what happens and proceed from there. Or: (1) pick the school you want to attend the most (guessing NYU or Columbia due to being in commuting distance to your SO) and (2) say, in better language, if you match the Chicago scholarship I will attend. If neither of those work well then you are just back to where you are now.mmoffx wrote:ph14 wrote:thnx for the responses -- I didn't try to leverage columbia yet, just got the award (or lack of award) - I did more of a "hey other schools gave me $" - is it worth it to re-appeal with something stronger?mmoffx wrote:You don't mention if you tried to leverage Columbia? Lol at advising this guy with a few years of work experience taking the $250k and starting his own small business. That's much more risky than going to law school at a T6 school.lecsa wrote:Or to invest it and make more money while getting a cheaper law school education at an institution of equal caliber.cotiger wrote:Stupid and crazy if you're paying for it with loans, sure. All I know is my parents or whoever had 250k to blow on me, I wouldn't have gone to law school. I'd have done something more interesting with my life (like start a business using that capital).
Again, the point of having money is to be able to get things you want: things like proximity to a SO, getting to living in the incredibly vibrant and exciting Village instead of dreary Hyde Park, and having an overall experience that is more in line with your personality.lecsa wrote:Or to invest it and make more money while getting a cheaper law school education at an institution of equal caliber.cotiger wrote:Stupid and crazy if you're paying for it with loans, sure. Not if you read the OP.hcrimson2014 wrote:Uchi is objectively the best school in your list and the only one to offer you a scholarship. It is a no brainer to go to Chicago.
