Columbia (85K) G'Town (105K) or NYU (70K)

So long-time lurker here. It's coming down to the wire for me and any advice would be immensely appreciated. Briefly, I want to do national security law and work for DoD, State, DHS, or their kin (as do countless others, I'm sure) for at least the near-term. I've already dipped my toe in the security field and currently live in D.C. I like it here and G'Town seems to have an understandably sharp focus on national security and international matters, but would I be stupid to turn down a half-tuition scholarship at Columbia or NYU to stay in the District and attend Georgetown, which has offered me only $20K or $35K more than either of the NY schools? Columbia of course places a heck of a lot of people into the private sector, much to my chagrin. Would the name recognition of Columbia or NYU be worth the extra money and leaving D.C.? Responses much appreciated!!

My mistake...total loan indebtness, including COA, would be very roughly around 90K out of Georgetown, 130K at Columbia, maybe 150K at NYU. I won't be getting much in the way of outside assistance. Not sure if my LSAT/GPA are relevant. Again, I will probably want to work in D.C. for the feds. Much obliged.

3.7/173
I stand corrected on the relevance.

Take Columbia. 130k is a great deal. Also, negotiate with NYU. Your COA should not be significantly higher there.

I love how people say they're "long time lurkers" of TLS, implying their familiarity with posting rules, yet they're unable to supply the forum with the necessary information to provide rational advice.

Columbia for 130k debt is an incredible option. CLS, hands down.

Thanks! I sent a letter to NYU as soon as I heard from Columbia yesterday, so hopefully I hear something back before it's too late.
And what a body blow. Well deserved, though.

CLS. Proximity =/= placement power; it'll ultimately be better for gov; and of course you'll always have EIP to fall back on.

Agreed, and certainly worth 40k more than GULC. Enjoy Columbia and apply for DOJ Honors and DoD Gen Counsel internships for 1L summer if you are interested in that kind of work.

Columbia without a shadow of a doubt
