One thing worth considering in this case (and not in many others) is what your academic focus is and how strong the school is in that focus.

I think this is a situation where it's worth taking on a little bit more debt (Stanford). You will likely have a great outcome with either choice (although academia is extremely hard to break into).

Yeah, I'd probably go with Stanford unless you have an econ PhD.

Yeah, not econ, though pneumonia's point is still credited (and something I've been investigating). I'm leaning toward Stanford at this price but wanted to make sure TLS folks weren't unanimously against me.

You really can't go wrong here. At Stanford, you probably will have to eat every penny of that 110k debt, especially because Stanford's LRAP doesn't cover academia and you'll make enough to where PAYE isn't that much of a discount. On the other hand, non-Econ Ph.D + Stanford + gunning for academia, you'll probably get it.

If you're looking at academia generally (not just law) Stanford is much more prestigious as an institution as a whole that might give you a leg up outside of law.
Chicago is known only in a few areas and Stanford outranks them in those generally.
