Top Law Schools

I'm trying to decide between Yale, Chicago and Michigan. I got grants/scholarships from all three but am still looking at a hefty investment.

Yale COA: 155K over 3 years
Chicago COA: 130K over 3 years
Michigan COA: 90K over 3 years

I'll be financing school mostly with loans but with some assistance from family. I have negligible debt from undergrad.

I'm from Chicago and have family there but I went to school in Massachusetts and have ties in New England as well. I know a few people in Ann Arbor but have no strong ties anywhere in Michigan. I really liked Michigan when I visited the law school though.

Looking to do public interest work but have varied interests within that field-- I would be interested in doing impact litigation but could also see working in a PD's office or at legal services. I would also like to clerk.

LSAT-- 179
GPA-- 3.98

Any thoughts?

you should be deciding b/t Yale for 155k and other T-14s for free tuition.

In the scenario you present: Yale.

In the scenario I feel you should be in (Yale 155k v. like maybe 20k in loans for living expenses for a T-14): Yale. Might be a closer question if you considered Biglaw an option.

i pick yale. the COA difference between it and chicago is small. plus since you want to clerk you have a greater chance at yale.

ETA: very surprised chicago didnt give you a ruby or something

I figured family assistance would keep you from getting near max grant aid. If 155k is the real number it's Yale easy. Still true even if the real number goes up a bit.

Nobody on this forum is going to tell you to do something other than Yale in this situation.

You must be strongly averse to New Haven to even ask this question.

If my cost of attendance decision between Yale and Chicago was only 25k, it wouldn't even be a choice - Yale all the way.


(For background, I'm also deciding between Yale and Chicago but my COA diff is more like $250k)

But seriously, if you want to go to Michigan or Chicago, call them up and say, "Hey, I'd like to join you guys if you can provide a full scholarship."
